Canon Digital IXUS 90 IS | Digital Camera Review | Adjustments
The Canon Digital 90 IS camera has been equipped with a luxurious image stabilization system, I cannot deny that, but at the same time I regret that Canon hasn't equipped the camera with a nice wide angle. Looking at the competition with Panasonic as a good example, we see more and more compact cameras getting equipped with 28mm wide angle. The aforementioned brand has made wide angle a standard and at times even 25mm is used! Time to say goodbye to the 35mm 'wide angle'!

The camera has a swift response. Within a second after activating the camera, it is ready to take its first picture. The camera lacks an optical viewfinder but instead you have the astonishing 3 inch sized monitor. The monitor is clear and rich in contrast and the high resolution of 230,000 pixels obviously affects the reproduction in a positive way. The zoom lens responses almost immediately and zooms in 6 small stops from 35 to 105mm thereafter moving into a digital zoom. The possibility of a minimum focus distance of 3cm convinces for macro photography. The macro images are full of contrast and are crispy clear from side to side. Due to the small wide angle hardly any distortion is visible if any at all. You have to make sure there is sufficient light since the internal flash is not capable of exposing a subject completely from that close.

10 Megapixel CCD sensor
The Canon Digital IXUS 90 IS could not escape its faith. This small compact camera also got equipped with a 10 Megapixel CCD sensor. We have said it many times before; it is a silly situation and nothing more than marketing, but still for now an ongoing process that can't be stopped. One party claims that "the market demands for it" and the other party claims the opposite. Fact is that a 6 Megapixel sensor meets the requirements easily to guarantee a photo realistic high quality print. Every additional pixel is overkill.

ISO values of the Canon IXUS 90IS
The high resolution sensor always struggles with an increase of noise at high ISO settings, but I have to say that the Canon IXUS 90 IS shows a fantastic result up and including ISO 400. From ISO 800 we see noise increase a little in dark areas but it is still under control providing the picture is well-exposed. More than 800 ISO (maximum of ISO 3200) delivers a result that is less acceptable if we look at the quality. This high ISO however enables you to take a picture that you would not be able to take otherwise. Canon's IS system plays a main role in the possibility of carrying on shooting as long as possible with a low ISO setting. The image stabilization system enables shooting with slow shutter speeds, in my case to approximately 2 stops.

Canon IXUS 90 IS with motion detection
The Canon IXUS 90 IS has more to offer besides image stabilization. Canon keep on innovating and have added motion detection. This functionality detects moving subjects within the image and selects automatically the optimum shutter speed and ISO sensitivity in order to put priority on capturing the moving object. Occasionally the camera misses an object in practice but in general it works surprisingly precise and also fast. Not only did Canon add this functionality, they also optimised face detection. Besides detecting, focussing and correctly exposing of the face, the white balance and the flash settings are calculated too. That way a better exposed portrait with a more natural skin tone is obtained. Functionality inside the camera that actually adds to the quality, excellent!

Colour reproduction & White balance
Colour reproduction is excellent, just as we are used to from Canon. Canon offer beautiful, natural colours with perfect saturation. The white balance setting works as hard as it can in auto mode, it succeeds, but sometimes it has a hiccup when taking pictures in surroundings with mainly incandescent light. Brightness and contrast are simply excellent and certainly when you use the Canon Digital IXUS 90 IS in daytime, the quality of the camera stands out and convinces. Twilight or bad light circumstances with the need for high ISO and the use of the small flash, are giving the compact camera a hard time as always. Image stabilization gives the camera a hand in this situation until the maximum amount of steps is reached after which the camera has to use high ISO or fire the flash.

Canon Digital IXUS 90 IS compact camera
For those looking for a stylish camera, not wanting to give up on innovative image solutions, the Canon IXUS 90 IS might just be right for you. It is an easy camera to carry with you at all times and thanks to the high quality camera technique it stands up for itself. A compact camera however will feel its limits sooner or later, and this is the case too for the IXUS 90IS, but on the other hand it has its compact and stylish design.
