|Solid and reliable SLR camera
Professional cameras such as the EOS-1Ds Mark are subject to high demands. Not only on the field of reliability and speed but also on image quality and the possibility to fine-tune the camera. The Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III certainly doesn't let you down on this. The photographer is in charge of the camera and not the other way around. A camera such as the EOS is a tool for the professional to get his job done with. Solidness, reliability and quality are very important requirements that the camera has to meet.
Canon 1Ds Mark III ISO sensitivity
ISO sensitivity standard ranges from ISO 100 up to and including ISO 1600 and can be enhanced from ISO 50 up to and including ISO 3200. The sensor is actually 20-30 percent less sensitive than the manufacturer claims according to our DIWA Labs tests. ISO 50 however shows an increased sensitivity of the image sensor than the specifications state. Still the exposures are generally excellent especially with matrix metering. It fits most situations. In difficult circumstances spot metering comes in handy but it is also more time-consuming.
Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III Noise
The amount of noise increases together with the increase of sensitivity. It's not until ISO 1600 you see real noise in the pictures taken in practice. The DIWA Labs graph shows a line that levels. According to the figures you should see noise at ISO 800 but practice deviates from theory here. At ISO 3200 noise increases considerably. But it isn't a problem at all. It is a lot better than we are used to from other cameras. And it is definitely better than films at the time. I even dare to say that it is even better than middle format film back then. Results from practice, next to technical lab results, often show differences that are invisible to the eye or in the final result, next to technical lab tests results. That makes it important to not only rely on technical lab results but also draw conclusions from tests made in practice.
Extraordinary dynamic range
Although pixel size reduced, the light sensitive part remained almost identical. And what's more; that part is capable of capturing more light thanks to the smaller pixel depth. Therefore the dynamic range does not suffer from an increase of pixels on the same sensor format. The dynamic range is extraordinary. It will amaze you as to what gets captured with low sensitivity. From beautiful dark detailed parts to detailed white in a picture, everything is possible. High ISO suffers from some noise, but still the quality is of an exceptionally high level. Well done!
Colour reproduction & White balance
It is important for professional photographers, certainly for product and fashion photographers, that the colours on the picture match the real colours. The Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III does well on this subject.
|The white balance is excellent and only in extremely difficult light you have to make a manual white balance. The colours are rendered just fine. Of course your own personal taste has a say in this and the settings too. You have to find your way first. Anyway RAW still lets you adjust a lot afterwards.
That many pixels on a sensor create one huge disadvantage though. The massive resolution lets you capture many details but you have to have the disposal of excellent optics. The Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III does achieve it with the L-series of top lenses but you will find some lenses having trouble reaching the resolution of the camera. And if you think you can use cheap lenses on this camera, you are wrong. If you however use high quality lenses, a new world opens up to you. At times I was flabbergasted to see what this CMOS sensor was capable of capturing. It really is exceptional. Naturally for the ultimate joy you have to use a tripod. The Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III is not a camera for taking snapshots, even though you can, but it is definitely a camera for true photography.
