|Olympus Stylus 790 SW - ISO values
You'd expect the Olympus Mju 790 SW to be able to deliver a fine signal/noise ratio because there are fewer pixels than average on the small sensor. Well, the pictures made with up to ISO 400 are reasonable to pretty good, but I suggest you don't go near a higher ISO setting than 400. The pictures will show so much noise, and I am talking about the ugly coloured one. My advice is to restrict yourself to ISO 400 or less, and that applies to most compact cameras. Another reason to just use the low ISO values is the dynamic range. The dynamic range on the Olympus 790 SW in itself is excellent up to ISO 100. Pictures show a lot of detail when using the low ISO settings and the camera performs above average in this case.
Olympus Mju 790 SW - Colour reproduction
When we take a look at the colour reproduction we see that the camera offers great reproduction but with some colours like yellow, green and blue, the captured information differs considerably from the reality. Mostly this is shown in the skin tones when making portraits or in landscape pictures with a blue sky. The skin tones tend to be greenish whereas the blue sky tends to turn out purplish. The camera seems to prefer registering some colour shades with more saturation. Colour rendering gets influenced by the light circumstances in a certain situation other than inside a test lab of course. And next the preset white balance settings turn out to be very wrong at times. The auto white balance performs the best and it is probably the most frequent used setting by most users.
|Olympus 790 SW - Limitations of the camera
The Olympus Mju 790 SW is a camera offering ease of use in the first place so don't ask too much. For instance; imagine shooting in bad light circumstances. The camera tends to underexpose even in low light (which creates visible noise) unlike the pictures made in standard daylight. Those pictures look fine as far as exposure is concerned. You really have to take the limits of the camera into account as well as the effective range of the flash when using it. When zooming in the flash has a maximum range of approximately 2.5 meters and in wide angle there is one spare meter.
Olympus Mju 790 SW - Easy to use camera
Keeping in mind that the Olympus Mju 790 SW is not specifically meant to become the second compact camera of a photographer, but as the camera that lets you effortlessly and actively take pictures in and outdoors, we have to consider the limitations coming with this. The internal zoom lens is very handy to keep the camera compact and to keep dust and water out; at the same time we see a decrease of sharpness due to the zoom construction. You will not really mind this very much though. The pictures are fine once printed out but as soon as you enlarge them on the monitor or you compare lab tests the differences will show clearly.
Olympus 790 - Shooting in an easy & simple way
The solid character of the Olympus Mju 790 SW is a surplus value of this camera. It is pleasant to be able to use the camera around or on water or during a skiing holiday. The main aim of this camera is to enjoy shooting in an easy and simple way. The fact that the quality stays behind a bit is inherent for the concept of the camera.
Olympus Mju 790 SW - Solidness vs Image quality
The camera's menu is well-structured. You don't have to go into it too often though because of the buttons on the back of the camera offering various functionalities. The quality of the Olympus Mju 790 SW is considerable. When you only look at the image quality the camera might stay behind a bit compared to the competitors that offer a tad more quality but as far as solidness goes, the Mju 790 SW is far ahead. Personally I'd give the Olympus 790SW the benefit of the doubt. Carrying the camera with you for the sheer fun of it, independent of circumstances, is a good idea!
