|Canon EOS 40D digital SLR camera review : The new Canon EOS 40D is Canon's seventh camera in this segment. Put the models next to each other, from the EOS D30 to the 40D, and look at them from a distance, you will notice that it is hard to see the differences between them. This is a completely different approach than it used to be for analogue cameras. A model would last for approximately 5 to 10 years and would then be replaced by an entirely new camera. If you place the first and the latest camera side by side; the D30 and 40D then you will be able to see a vast difference. It shows that alterations have carried out in small steps over the years.
Canon 40D SLR - DIGIC III image processor
Canon listened very well to their users and testers. The camera has been improved significantly compared to the 30D. And although most people would look at the sensor immediately, the main improvement is not found there. The amount of pixels has been increased alright to 10 million but pixels are only one thing in a camera. The EOS 40D has been equipped with the latest DIGIC III processor and that is a more important step than you would think. Not only does the new processor improve the image quality, in addition the DIGIC III enables Live View. And it enables faster processing of the signal; the image speed got enhanced to 6.5 frames per second.
Canon 40D digital SLR - LCD monitor
In order to use Live View to the fullest the Canon EOS 40D has been equipped with a beautiful and large LCD monitor of 3-inch. Unfortunately the LCD monitor hasn't got as many pixels as the Nikon D300 for example, but it is a vast improvement compared to the 40D's predecessor. Fortunately the auto focus also works in Live View on the EOS 40D, its big brothers from the 1D-series are lacking that option.
Canon EOS 40D - Housing & Viewfinder
For me the main improvements are found in a totally different area. We have been asking for it for ages and finally we got it: a housing that can stand a rain shower and dust. The weather sealing is not as advanced as it is on the EOS 1D series, but you don’t have to cover or hide the camera when it is raining and you are able to shoot problem-free on the beach. The next very important if not the most important improvement is the viewfinder. At last Canon has equipped a camera in this class with a decent viewfinder of a decent size. So finally we got rid of the small viewing angle. The Canon 40D has the ISO visible in the viewfinder and it remains visible during setting which is a welcoming improvement.
Canon 40D SLR camera review
Naturally the sensor size remained the same and the Canon EOS 40D offers a crop factor of 1.6x. It enables continuing the use of EF-S lenses, among them the large wide angle. In front of the sensor a filter is positioned that shakes to remove dust. The same system is found in the EOS 400D and 1D series and it works fine. LetsGoDigital tested the Canon EOS 40D during the EOS Safari 2007 event in Kenya, Africa with a beautiful 400mm f/2.8 telephoto lens and in the Netherlands with a standard EF-S 17-85mm 1:4-5.6 IS USM lens. Our findings can be read in the following Canon EOS 40D review.
