Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ18 Camera review | Conclusion
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 Megazoom camera
The success of the Megazoom cameras lead to a farther advancing of the concept and to equip a small housing with no less than 18x optical zoom. The resolution of 8 Megapixels suffices easily for printing small to large prints. Although the immense popularity of the Megazoom is enough proof that they have the right to exist next to the entry level digital SLR, the Megazoom encounters some problems to reach the same level as far as image quality is concerned. You can't get around the fact that concessions have to be made and that the noise that comes with high ISO settings due to the amount of pixels on the small images sensor is one of these negative results.

Panasonic FZ18 - Ease of use & User friendly
But if you can live with that or simply avoid high ISO settings as much as possible, you will get an extremely versatile Megazoom camera in return. The ease of use and the user-friendliness of the Panasonic Lumix FZ18 are excellent if not fabulous. The ergonomics, the structure of the menu and the navigation are a pleasant experience and ensure you focussing on one thing only: framing the picture you are about to capture.

Panasonic Lumix FZ18 - Setting possibilities & Functions
While making that one very best picture, the photographer can lean on an abundance of setting possibilities and functions. Think of the reliable and very effective optical image stabilizer, MEGA O.I.S., and the electronic viewfinder that also plays a big role. And then of course the main force of the camera; the 18x optical wide angle zoom, the feature that ensures all-round photography with the Panasonic FZ18. You will probably need a few days to get used to all the functions but after that you will have an ideal tool in your hands for capturing your favourite moments.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 - Good image quality
Besides the physical features, the image quality is important. And it is just fine, providing you stay away from high ISO values. Unfortunately this is how it is. And I have to say that Panasonic is not the only manufacturer continuing the Megapixel race. One starts, the other one follows and that is how the manufacturers keep the race for as many Megapixels as possible going. We have mentioned it before but I'd like to repeat it; 6 Megapixels suffice to guarantee high quality prints. Please leave the higher amounts of Megapixels to the DSLR cameras.

Panasonic DMC-FZ18 - Fine alternative for a DSLR camera
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 pleased me tremendously and although there is room for improvement of some features, the Panasonic FZ18 offers high quality photography. When you learn to cope with the minus points, which is not so difficult with a MEGA O.I.S. at your disposal, you will experience a versatile camera that lets you as a beginning or advanced photographer work effortlessly with it. The Panasonic Lumix FZ18 is a so-called all-in-one camera with user-friendliness and all-round features of high quality. A fine alternative for a DSLR camera and for those wanting to become more skilled in photography a good stepping stone to the more serious business, a digital SLR camera. Outstanding!
