Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ18 | Digital Camera Review | Storage and Energy
An increase of resolution compared to the FZ8, automatically indicates a larger file for the Panasonic Lumix FZ18 camera. Besides JPEG, RAW files are possible and even a combination of RAW+JPEG which delivers a final file size of around 15MB. Eight Megapixels of resolution are more than enough and to be honest I would have preferred to have seen fewer pixels on the camera's small sensor. Six Megapixels of resolution suffice to deliver high quality prints and enlargements.

Panasonic FZ18 - SD & SDHC memory card support
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 is standard delivered with 27MB internal memory. It may be clear that this is certainly not enough to get going with the camera. A standard JPEG picture is approximately 3.5MB so for one week you can take a picture every day before the memory is full. Maybe an inappropriate comment but isn't it time to enhance the internal memory extensively? Considering approximately 100 pictures, the advice would be to obtain a flash memory card with at least 512MB, but preferably 2 or 4GB storage capacity. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 supports the SD and SDHC memory cards which opens the door to use 32GB (expected in 2008) storage capacity.

Considering 2GB storage capacity:

Panasonic DMC FZ18 - SanDisk Ultra II Plus SD memory card
During the tests in practice I used the Panasonic Lumix FZ18 with a 4GB SDHC card and besides that I used it in combination with a special type Secure Digital memory card; the SanDisk Ultra II Plus SD memory card. It has the size of an SD card but does have a unique feature; taking the card out of the camera you can snap it in two and a USB interface is then freed. This way you can insert the card directly in a free USB port and get access to the stored pictures or videos. No need for wires or a card reader, even the camera can be put aside.

Panasonic Lumix FZ18 - USB 2.0 Full Speed interface
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 has been equipped with a USB 2.0 Full Speed interface. It transfers pictures on a high speed. Panasonic could have selected the Hi-Speed connection but obviously expects the user to be satisfied with the Full Speed connection. The speed in itself is acceptable but a USB Hi-Speed interface would look good on the camera and to be honest, it should belong to the standard equipment of the camera in my opinion.

Panasonic CGR S006E 7,2V 710mAh Lithium Ion battery
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 gets its energy from a CGR S006E 7.2V 710mAh Lithium-Ion battery. It is the same one that is being used for the FZ8 so photographers that swap from FZ8 to FZ18 will be able to still use their spare battery. The battery has to be recharged in the separate battery charger which takes approximately 2 hours. Despite the fact the 2.5 inch sized LCD monitor is constantly active; we can say that the battery is very economical. The small sized battery ensures an average of 400 pictures (according to CIPA standard). If you have to photograph sequentially and frequently without the chance of recharging the battery you should purchase an extra battery, but other than that the delivered battery will do just fine.
