Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS | Digital Camera Review | Camera
It seems to me that the compact size of the Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS cannot become more compact or it would be at the cost of the last few operating elements the camera possesses. The IS in the name stands for Image Stabilizer, an optical image stabilizer currently integrated in many standard compact cameras by various manufacturers. The luxurious and stylish design of the Canon IXUS 860 IS camera is mainly carried out in two colours; black for the back and silver for the front. The nicely curved corners with the silver lines give this camera a classy and unique appearance. The size of the camera with its dimensions of 92.6 x 58.8 x 25.9 mm and its weight of approximately 155 grams (body only) make it a camera to always carry with you.

Canon IXUS 860 IS - Stable digital camera
The Canon IXUS 860 IS compact camera is very solid. The camera feels stable in your hand despite the somewhat smooth material and the strongly curved corners. The weight of the camera certainly adds to this feeling. The camera has a fast start-up time and the 3.8x optical zoom lens is almost immediately correctly positioned to make the first shot. The 8 Megapixel image sensor guarantees high resolution pictures offering sufficient information to deliver large prints.

Canon Digital IXUS 860IS - Multi-selector
The back of the camera is dominated by the huge monitor with right next to it a small amount of buttons. The multi-selector is extremely small, but it is very easy to operate. The raised ring around the edge of the selector gives you just that little extra you need to navigate through the menu blind-folded. The centre of the selector contains the FUNC button that slowly but surely is becoming the most recognized button on a camera and always present. The FUNC button is very efficient and offers direct access to the setting you are looking for.
Canon 860 IS - Face detection & AF assistant illuminator
The top of the camera contains a small number of buttons and among them we find the large release button with around it the ring to operate the 3.8x optical zoom. The Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS camera has a zoom range of 28-105mm (equivalent of a 35mm camera). The brightness of the lens is average with f/2.8 - f5.8. The focus function of the camera is enhanced with the so-called face detection; a function that lets the camera detect and focus on a maximum of nine faces. Besides that an AF assistant illuminator offers support in badly lit circumstances. The internal image processor DIGIC is one of the third generation processors and proved itself in practice a long time ago; for example in the EOS DSLR cameras.

Canon 860IS digital camera - Lithium Ion battery
The Canon IXUS 860 IS digital camera uses a small NB-5L Lithium-Ion battery with a capacity of 3.7V 1120 mAh for its energy. The battery fits in the compartment found on the camera's bottom. The same compartment also offers room to a card slot with SD platform support. In addition to the SD card the Canon 860 IS also supports SDHC memory cards that offer 4GB of storage capacity and higher. The Canon Digital IXUS 860IS is one of the many branches of the IXUS generation. A striking camera as far as design is concerned and equipped with the latest digital technique.
