Nikon Coolpix P5000 Camera review | Conclusion
Nikon Coolpix P5000 compact digital camera
Nikon’s Coolpix P5000 is another of Nikon’s advanced cameras in the top segment of the digital compact camera market. It is still a popular category, because many professional photographers want to have an additional, small camera next to their DSLR, without having to make too many sacrifices in ease of use and quality. The 10 Megapixel resolution places Nikon in the high resolution segment. This is a must for marketing purposes, but if this high resolution is desired by the experienced photographer is another question.

Nikon P5000 - Magnesium body
The Nikon Coolpix P5000 is one of the nicest compact cameras that I have worked with recently. The Nikon P5000 is not only very compact and lightweight, which makes it easy to carry; it is also a very solid camera, thanks to the magnesium body. I easily had the camera hanging around my shoulder, and it felt as if it was a rangefinder. The Nikon Coolpix P5000 deserves compliments for the way in which it handles. Due to the rubber and the sophisticated format the camera is very comfortable to handle; it feels good. I also really enjoyed the Nikon P5000 in terms of its operation. It is a clearly well-organized camera, which you can use without even reading the manual.

Nikon Coolpix P5000 - Zoom range
You can work pretty fast with the Nikon P5000 camera, although you will probably have to get used to the ‘speed’ of the auto focus and be satisfied with the fact that real action cannot be captured, which is too bad. Nikon could have scored more convincingly with a wide-angle lens, in order to outcompete the PowerShot G7. Especially since we see compact cameras with a 28mm lens more frequently, Nikon Coolpix P5000’s 36mm is a stark contrast. Of course the range of 36 - 126mm is suitable for all kinds of photography, but the true landscape photographer or serious photographer would have opted for the 28mm lens.

Nikon Coolpix P5000 - ISO & Auto focus
If you photograph in sufficient light, you can take beautiful photographs with the Nikon P5000, without nasty effects, but with very natural colours and sharpness. There are plenty of details and as a fervent DSLR user you are almost surprised that this small device delivers such high quality. It is different when you try to increase the sensitivity. Especially above ISO 800 you have to be satisfied with a loss in detail and an increase in noise. This is something to take into consideration when you are working with high ISO settings. In low light conditions the auto focus is disappointing, especially if you do not want to use the AF-illuminator, which I can understand if you don’t. The light, which is true for all AF-illuminators on digital cameras, is rather bright and conspicuous. This is not handy if you are trying to take a photograph unnoticed. For non-moving subjects this is of course not a problem.

Nikon Coolpix P5000 digital camera - Recommended!
The power of the Nikon Coolpix P5000 is found in the camera itself. The camera will feel comfortable for most photographers, and that makes it worth it. You have to settle for a few shortcomings, but if you can live with that, you truly have a great camera. The Nikon Coolpix P5000 is in my opinion one of the nicest compact cameras available right now, it is really well built. Of course there is always something left to hope for, and the camera is not perfect. A wide-angle lens and RAW format are on my wish list. If Nikon were to fulfill half of my wish list I would be completely satisfied. I recommend it!
