Nikon Coolpix P5000 | Digital Camera Review | Introduction
Nikon Coolpix P5000 review : There were times when manufacturers competed in high-end digital compact cameras. They provided an interesting alternative to the much more expensive SLRs. The top model compact cameras operated in the same way as the digital SLR cameras and offered great quality for that time. Since the introduction of inexpensive SLRs, high end compact cameras seemed obsolete. That ended last year, when Canon introduced the PowerShot G7. Quickly Nikon responded with the Nikon Coolpix P5000. It is a nice, advanced compact camera with similar traits to a real SLR.

Nikon P5000 - 10 Megapixel resolution
On paper the Nikon P5000 seems like an ideal camera for the experienced photographer who does not want to carry the complete SLR equipment, but demands a lot from a camera. With a 10 Megapixel resolution, the Nikon Coolpix P5000 is up to date with the latest trends. This resolution gives more than enough space to be able to make large prints or to edit the image extensively. For the advanced photographer it is also convenient that besides being able to do everything automatically, the camera’s aperture and shutter speed preferences can be operated manually.

Nikon Coolpix P5000 - ISO sensitivity
The distinguishing feature of the Nikon P5000 digital compact camera is its sensitivity, which runs up to ISO 3200. With such a high sensitivity, the resolution, however, does become smaller. Up until ISO 2000 you can photograph with the full 10 Megapixels. In combination with the Vibration Reduction, which is the optical image stabilizer, you can even capture movement in low light. This is one of the interesting features of the Nikon Coolpix P5000. Of course face recognition is also included, which we see more and more often in digital compact cameras, and even some DSLRs.

Nikon Coolpix P5000 - Body & Lens
The body of the Nikon Coolpix P5000 has remained nice and compact, and it is made out of a very nice material: magnesium. The Nikon Coolpix P5000 is a real pocket sized camera, it is ideal to carry with you. The zoom range of the Nikon runs from 36 to 126 mm, which is comparable to most compact cameras. However, the lens is not very sensitive, even at the largest aperture of f/2.7-5.3. If desired, you can add converters to the Nikon Coolpix P5000. Around the lens there is a ring for adapters, so that you can increase the range of focus as well as your creativity.

Nikon Coolpix P5000 - i-TTL flash system
Another special feature of the Nikon P5000 is the advanced i-TTL flash system. It is one of the best, if not the best, flash systems currently available. You do have to mount a separate flash onto the camera, just like the Nikon Speedlight SB-600. But this does allow the photographer many more options to control the lighting. After all, photography is writing with light!

Nikon Coolpix P5000 compact camera review
The Nikon Coolpix P5000 camera now has everything in store to serve as an attractive alternative to the bulkier DSLR. Even the seasoned photographer will be satisfied with this 10 Megapixel compact camera. We had the Nikon Coolpix P5000 with us for a while so that we could test it extensively. Our findings can be read in the next Nikon Coolpix P5000 review.
