Pentax Optio W10 | Digital Camera Review | Storage and Energy
Those who will be working with the Pentax Optio W10 from the box with a charged battery will have to make do with an internal memory of approximately 10.5MB. It goes without saying that this capacity far from suffices to store a large amount of high resolution images. When shooting in the highest image quality, and with the lowest compression, you will find 3 images to be the limit. Opening the lid on the camera's bottom side provides access to the card slot for the adding of extra memory. The Pentax W10 supports the well-known Secure Digital memory card. The still reasonably new SDHC memory cards are not yet supported, but that doesn't really matter. The Secure Digital cards are available with a storage capacity ranging from 32MB up to a maximum of 2GB. To give you an example: a 2GB SD card translates to approximately 640 images in the highest quality.

SanDisk Ultra II SD card
I opted for a fast SanDisk Extreme III Secure Digital card to test the Pentax Optio W10 in practice. Although this small card guarantees the fastest reading and writing speeds for an SD card, it must be said that it is a bit of an overkill to combine it with a camera such as the Pentax W10; the camera simply fails to keep up, in fact, it doesn't need much more than a standard card or a faster card such as the Ultra II SanDisk SD card. As mentioned earlier, the Pentax Optio W10 is not the fastest of the bunch, and will thus not really ask much of a card. If you will be taking the camera with you on holiday, and plan to capture significantly more photos than you normally would, we would recommend choosing a card with a larger storage capacity. The Pentax Optio W10 simply performs its best when combined with a minimum of 256MB, or preferably 512MB if possible.

Considering 512MB of storage capacity:

Pentax Optio W10 - Storage capacity
Standard, Pentax do not supply a flash memory card, which means prospective users will have to keep an extra memory card in mind when purchasing this camera. However, prices of Secure Digital cards are low, and a high capacity SD card is thus often available at relatively low-cost. It should also be said that it always comes in handy to purchase an extra large card. Take underwater-photography for example; back in the old days of film, 36 images would be your limit. A high capacity memory card, however, will enable you to keep shooting virtually endlessly. And if you want to record a video clip in VGA quality in between, you will soon come to appreciate the luxury of high storage capacities.

Pentax Optio W10 - USB interface
The USB interface is located behind the secure, water-proof lid on the bottom side of the camera. The so-called PC/AV connection enables a connection with, for example, a notebook, so that you can transfer the stored images and video recordings. In addition to this, the camera can also be connected to a large format screen, such as a television.

Pentax W10 - D-L18 Lithium Ion battery
The Pentax Optio W10 gets its power from a D-L18 Lithium Ion battery, which has a capacity of 3.7V 710mAh. Just as with its predecessors, the battery is neatly hidden from sight behind the water-proof seal. The camera is standard supplied with a charger. It takes approximately 100 minutes to fully charge an empty battery. To the tests that have been applied according to CIPA (with LCD monitor on, flash used for 50% of the images, and shot at 23 degrees Celsius), tell us that you will be able to capture approximately 240 images, 80 minutes of video, or 240 minutes of audio recordings with a fully charged battery. Although these numbers might not always be met in practice, due to conditions deviating from those of the CIPA, they are more than likely to suffice for the average user. If you expect to capture a large amount of images, and are unsure whether or not you will be able to re-charge the battery in between, we would recommend purchasing a second battery.
