Kodak EasyShare V610 | Digital Camera Review | Conclusion
Kodak EasyShare V610 dual lens camera
We got acquainted with the dual lens concept of Kodak before with the EasyShare V570. The emphasis was then on ultra wide-angle and less on telephoto. With the Kodak EasyShare V610 Kodak has changed tack and thrown itself on to the telephoto range. The concept stays attractive and innovative and is still unique in the world of digital cameras. Using two image sensors offer perhaps more applications than that are now in use, but we may be getting ahead of things with this.

Kodak EasyShare V610 - 10x Optical zoom
The impression we got from the Kodak EasyShare V610 during and after testing is one of mixed feelings. On the one hand the design of the Kodak V610 is solid and the compact housing offers a lot of user friendliness with 10x optical zoom and a fine resolution of 6 Megapixel. On the other hand the feeling stays that Kodak only focussed on the dual lens and did not invest in picture making aspects such as ISO and image stabilisation techniques. The Kodak EasyShare V610 lags behind in this area which makes it the weakest link of the camera.

Kodak EasyShare V610 - Focus
The focus is, just as in the EasyShare V570, not very convincing. It seems like Kodak minimised the sharpness in the camera. Fine details in pictures are therefore not represented convincingly and the picture needs some editing to enhance the result. This will not be a problem for the experienced photographer, but for a beginner who wants ease, it is perhaps a superfluous and unwanted extra action.

Kodak EasyShare V610 - ISO values
As said before, the quality of the ISO settings stay behind when looking at what is possible nowadays. ISO settings up to 400 are usable and of good quality, but 400 ISO shows an unwanted high amount of noise. We experienced this in the Kodak V570 and we have to observe that Kodak did not bend itself to any improvements in this area. Because 800 ISO does not offer a solution, the chance of blurring due to movement is higher at 10x optical zoom.

Kodak V610 - User friendly camera
Besides the criticism there is still enough positive news. At the Kodak V610 the EasyShare concept is strong as well and the user-friendly way of handling and simple user interface leaves nothing to be desired. The way that Kodak transfers stored pictures to a computer or notebook, or printing the best pictures is simple and efficient. By using the dual lens technology the compact design was made possible and with that the ease of use increases. At the Kodak V570 (23 mm wide-angle) the use of the panorama function was very handy, but the Kodak EasyShare V610 is also a good match for panorama pictures, although it must be said that the lack of a real wide-angle is obvious.

Kodak EasyShare V610 - Colour representation
The colour representation will be pleasant for most users. Because of the somewhat warm representation the pictures come more to life as it were and who takes the trouble to edit the pictures here and there will get nice, contrasted pictures or prints. Besides the still pictures Kodak is also capable of excellent video clip recordings. These clips were played by us on a large television set and it must be said that they were of a fine quality.

Kodak V610 - Improve typical camera characteristics
All in all we can conclude that the Kodak EasyShare V610 is an interesting camera with a nice zoom range. The road Kodak took with the V570 has led to the Kodak V610, but it is a pity that Kodak forgot to improve a few aspects along the way. Especially typical camera characteristics such as ISO and image stabilisation should be worked out again on the drawing board. At face value the Kodak EasyShare V610 stands for what it does, but looking at the competition we see that there are more possibilities.
