Huricane Katrina - Photo Rescue
"PhotoShelter's locally and geogra phically redundant archiving platform is designed to protect digital image archives from the damaging effects of natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina. We're honored to be able to support their efforts in such a positive way." Believing in OPR's mission, PhotoShelter has donated a free Multi-User (MU) account, which allows their multiple photographers, restoration volunteers and editors to easily interact with a single online archive. The PhotoShelter MU product is designed to make large-scale worldwide image distribution and collaboration efforts easy to manage for photo agencies, collectives, and corporations with image assets.
Photo restoration - Digital copies
"We are constantly dealing with the flow of incoming and outgoing images as we seek to restore the memories that would have been lost to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina," said David Ellis, co-founder of Operation Photo Rescue. The restoration process begins with volunteers in the field using professional-grade digital cameras to digitize the damaged photographs. The digital copies are then uploaded to OPR's PhotoShelter archive where they can be accessed by volunteers. Once the images are restored, the volunteers upload them to the OPR archive, ready for printing and delivery to the original owner - free of charge.
PhotoShelter donation - Storm Damage
"With PhotoShelter's generous donation, OPR now has a great distribution platform that quickly gets the storm-damaged photos into the hands of our restoration artists. The restoration volunteers have the ability to view, select and download an image that best suits their individual skills, and also provides a great tracking tool for OPR management to oversee the progress of each image throughout the entire restoration process," Ellis said. The OPR archive on PhotoShelter contains approximately 1100 images in need of retouching, and volunteers continue to register daily through the organization’s website.
