SIGGRAPHArt exhibition in Boston at SIGGRAPH 2006 : The SIGGRAPH 2006 Art Gallery, Intersections is estimated to be the world's largest and one of the most unique international digital art exhibitions featuring an extensive collection of works that merge innovative computer graphics and interactive techniques with artistic practice. Taking place during SIGGRAPH 2006, the 33rd International Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques held 30 July to 3 August 2006 in Boston, Massachusetts, the gallery includes works from 150 different artists, researchers, and technologists from 16 countries. Overall there were 1,053 submissions from 34 countries evaluated by an international jury.

"These are some of the most innovative digital artists in the world," stated Bonnie Mitchell, SIGGRAPH 2006 Art Gallery Chair from Bowling Green State University. "The breadth and depth of the content is staggering and should leave the audience breathless. Furthermore, it is amazing and inspiring to see people from around the world creatively pushing the boundary of what can be done when art and technology collide."

Digital art exhibition - Interactive
Intersections includes 88 wall-mounted pieces that range from digital paintings and collages to new forms of art including "motion painting," algorithmic images, LED optical art, robotics, electronic fiber art, and 3D animated Lenticular prints. Other highlights include interactive art installations that allow visitors to use their bodies to control various aspects of the artwork. Visitors are encouraged to step on virtual puddles to cause flowers to grow, use their heart rate to affect the movement of virtual people, control the movement and lighting of a balloon ballet, feel temperature changes in an abstract animation by touching a thermally reactive table, splash water on a water fountain that lights up when it senses the water, and use Internet chat sessions to control the growth of a robotic plant. Plus, interactive audio installations allow participants to create music by moving objects on a light table; enter an environment where thousands of chirping elements detect human presence and communicate messages; and submerse themselves in a sound field that converges to form complex sound patterns.

SIGGRAPH 2006 Art Gallery
The Art Gallery includes experimental web art and interactive programs that push the boundaries of what can be done using the Internet and computer programming. The works include a web mosaic that is created by people using the Voice over Internet Protocol, a virtual environment created from the online BBC news, a musical instrument that is triggered by typing keywords, and a web-based parody of a "Dream Wedding" planner.

Boston art exhibition - Sculptures
Intersections also features sculptures created using digital processes. The sculptures range from abstract to representational and static to dynamic. Some sculptures began as mathematical models and others as artistic ideas. One sculpture is triggered by sound to create moving spikes of liquid metal that climb up and down a spiral cone. Other sculptures are the result of 3D computer models that are output on 3D stereo lithography printers.

From abstract art to Music videos
The wide range of content also includes artistic computer animations from seven countries. The works range from abstract art to experimental narrative to creative music videos. "Regardless of approach, the animations are expressively different from traditional animation and exemplify some of the most creative work being done in the field of art animation today," stated Mitchell.

Boston art gallery - Conference
As a means of contextualize the past, present, and future of digital art, the Art Gallery will host four panels of internationally renowned practitioners that will discuss topics such as generative art, interactive spaces, locative media, and pioneering digital art. There will be seven theoretical paper presentations that explore issues such as web animation, curation of interactive art, spatial representation, digital painting, and new forms of media. Throughout the conference, there will also be artist talks (called Sketches) that focus on the concept behind the work and the processes used in creating digital artwork.

SIGGRAPH 2006 - Intersections
Along with the diverse array of works in the Intersections will feature electronically mediated dance, music, theater, magic and hybrid performances as well as the first extensive retrospective of Charles A. Csuri's artwork. According to Mitchell, the goal is to make Intersections an incredibly exciting event that challenges and expands the notion of what art can be. Furthermore, the intent is that through this use of technology, creativity, thought-provoking concept and craftsmanship, the SIGGRAPH 2006 artists and performers will define a brave new direction for art.
