Steve's DigicamsCanon S3 IS review at Steves Digicams : Our good friends at Steves Digicams have published their review of the Canon PowerShot S3 IS digital camera. The Canon S3 IS incorporates a 6 Megapixel CCD images sensor and offers a 12x zoom lens that has an equivalent film focal length of 36-432 mm (f/2.7 at wide angle and f/3.5 at telephoto). The newly designed 6 Megapixel image sensor together with Canon's DIGIC II image processor dramatically reduces "noise" for better image quality and achieves ISO equivalent speed ratings ranging from 80 to 800. True to the PowerShot tradition, the Canon PowerShot S3 IS digital camera has many of the latest advances in Canon technology including the proprietary DIGIC II imaging processor.
Canon S3 IS review at Steves DigicamsCanon PowerShot S3 IS - Zoom lens
According to Steve Digicams: "The most prominent feature of the Canon S3 IS is its 12x Canon zoom lens, with a focal length coverage of 36 - 432mm in 35mm equivalence. Non-stabilized cameras with high power telephoto lenses require the use a tripod or a faster shutter speed to overcome the camera-shake issue. Not so with the Canon S3; its IS image-stabilized lens reduces the effect of camera shake in your long telephoto shots, and makes the camera capable of taking handheld shots in lower light levels without the flash."

Canon S3 IS review conclusion - Steves Digicams
Steve continues: "The Canon S3's auto focus system delivered consistently sharp images. It uses only a single AF point, but you can position it virtually anywhere in your composition. With the help of its AF-assist lamp, the S3 was able to auto focus quite reliably in conditions of low ambient light; in complete darkness, the maximum range of the AF-assist lamp was about 10 feet. Image noise was very low at sensitivity settings of ISO 80 and 100. Noise becomes detectable in shadow areas at ISO 200, and noticeable at ISO 400."
