LG G6 review
LG G6 smartphone review : At the MWC 2017, LG announced its new flagship smartphone for 2017. Although the G6 is the successor to the G5, it's a completely redesigned smartphone, the modular design is omitted. Instead the LG G6 features a completely new water and dust resistant housing, the smartphone sports a 5.7-inch FullVision display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, a 13 megapixel dual camera and Dolby Vision & HDR10 support. We received a LG G6 review copy in the color Ice Platinum Silver, a beautiful color that further enhances the premium appearance of this smartphone. In this LG G6 review we will go more in-depth about the pros and cons of LG's new top phone.|
LG G6 review
The LG phone has got a completely new design, I am delighted with the result. The metal housing really looks premium. The narrow edges around the screen and the shiny Platinum silver color give the LG G6 a stylish and chic appearance. Other color variants are white and black.
The 5,7-inch FullVision display with 18:9 aspect ratio directly catches the eye. Although the display is increased by half an inch, the overall dimensions (148.9 × 71.9 × 7.9 mm) of the device are slightly smaller than before, the edges around the device are minimized, leaving a large screen surface.
LG G6 processor
Although competitors like Samsung and Sony have waited with the launch of their 2017 handsets until the Snapdragon 835 was available, LG has chosen the Snapdragon 821 processor. The quad-core processor has a clock speed of 2.35Ghz. On paper this is a slightly slower processor.
In practice, I've used the G6 a lot, but the phone stays fast and runs all processes easily. There is absolutely no reason to believe you can better not buy the G6 because of its processor performance. The LG G6 works very well, the device is fast, easy to use and completely customizable.
LG G6 camera
The camera applications is of great importance of LG. This became obvious when the Korean company decided to announce the camera specs five days before the official launch of the G6. Like the LG G5, the G6 also features a dual camera. However, the LG G6 Dual Camera has been completely renewed. Two 13 megapixel image sensors are used, one with a 71˚ standard lens with f/1.8 aperture, the other has a 125˚ wide-angle lens with f/2.4.
The pictures are of good quality, if you take the lighting conditions into account. The test photos we made with the LG G6 are detailed and contrasting. The colors are bright, but also a bit over-saturated. Personally, I rather edit this afterwards. Also the dynamic range (the difference between the lightest and darkest parts) is certainly sufficient. At night, the amount of noise increases dramatically, which is of course a known problem for smartphones.
With moving subjects, the camera has more problems to focus. Another disadvantage is the camera speed, when you press the shutter button, it takes a while for the phone to actually take the picture. For action moments, you will always be late with the G6. Pity!
LG G6 review verdict
We are delighted with the overall results of the LG G6. With this smartphone LG puts itself back on the map. It starts with the design of the phone. The completely new waterproof design with the stunning 5.7-inch FullVision display looks very modern and stylish.
The slightly curved back provides a great grip. The G6 not only has a premium appearance, it is also a very user-friendly phone. The processor runs all tasks quickly and smoothly and the improved battery enhances the user experience.
LG G6 test score
The device is fully customizable and with the enhanced fingerprint scanner, you unlock the LG G6 in no time.
The image quality of the Dual Camera is not excellent, but certainly sufficient. The wide angle lens is a nice addition. However, the camera has a lot of trouble with poor lighting conditions. Also, the resolution of the front camera is somewhat poor.
The suggested retail price of the LG G6 is set at €749 / £649 / $719, in practice the device costs a little less. That makes this phone considerably cheaper than its biggest competitor, the Samsung Galaxy S8. With the G6, LG sets a very good alternative!
LG G6 pros
• Beautiful waterproof design
• Bright 5.7-inch FullVision display
• Dual Camera with wide angle lens
• Handy power button / fingerprint scanner on the back
• Various creative, unique features
• Good performances
LG G6 cons
• Front camera resolution
• A slightly older processor (in practice, you do not notice much about this!)
• It’s still a lot of money
