CasioCasio EX-ZR300 digital camera review : Within the Exilim ZR-series, you will find Casio’s most advanced digital compact cameras. Halfway through this year, Casio launched a new top model within the ZR-series. The Casio Exilim EX-ZR300 is a 16.1 megapixel camera with an extremely sensitive 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor and an High-Speed Exilim Engine HS image processor. Thanks to the 24mm wide-angle lens with 12.5x optical zoom, the Casio EX-ZR300 can zoom in on any subject and capture it in detail. For making the right composition, the EX-ZR300 is equipped with a clear, 3-inch Super Clear LCD display. We were allowed to test the Casio EX-ZR300 for a long time, our findings with this High-Speed camera can be read in the following Casio review.

Casio Exilim review
The Casio Exilim EX-ZR300 was designed for a wide audience. The elegant design is available in a set of four colors, and thanks to the many advanced functions, the camera will appeal to a wide target audience. There are several modes available for the amateur photographer, such as the Premium Auto Pro, with which the camera automatically adjusts the settings according to the shooting situation. The Casio Exilim ZR300 is not only useful for the amateur photographer, the more ambitious photographer will appreciate that the camera is equipped with a settings dial, with the A, S, and M modes. The A (F-stop selection) and S (shutter speed selection) are partially automatic settings, and complete manual control is available in the M-mode. Every photographer can start and grow on their own level with the many functions that the camera offers. Moreover, the Casio EX-ZR300 with its many High-Speed functions offers a large number of additional functions compared with competing camera models.

Exilim review

High-Speed Casio Exilim camera
Without a doubt, the Casio Exilim EX-ZR300 belongs to the fastest compact cameras of the moment, as there are many High-Speed functions integrated in the camera. You already notice it during the startup, thanks to the Quick Response function, the camera uses less than 1 second to start up. Then the Rapid Shutter function allows you to take continuous photos at lightning speed. Other High-Speed functions include ´High Speed Photos´, ´High Speed Movie´, ´HDR-function´ and the ´HDR-Art function´. These are each unique functions that cannot be found in competing camera models. As a user, all these functions are useless to you if the autofocus system and the image processor are not able to process these speeds. That is why Casio has equipped the Exilim ZR300 with a very fast High-speed autofocus, which only needs 0.12 seconds to focus. For the image processor, an Exilim Engine HS was implemented, allowing the camera to capture 30 photos per second, with a shutter speed of 40 fps. This makes the Casio Exilim EX-ZR300 an ideal action camera; no subject is too fast for this Exilim camera!

Casio Exilim EX-ZR300 camera functions
Compared with the EX-ZR200, its predecessor, the EX-ZR300 has the same image sensor, processor and lens, also the screen remains the same. Differences are found in the camera functions, such as the HS Night Shot and Art Shot function of the EX-ZR300. The HS Night Shot mode is ideal in lower light situations. The camera takes a series of photos, which the HS Night Shot function transforms into one clear, sharp photo. The ART Shot function is an equally interesting function; you can take artistic photos with it. The Casio Exilim ZR300 offers 7 filter effects, including soft focus, pop-art, toy camera, and miniature effect. By turning the settings dial to 'Best Shot', the photo effects as well as the many scene modes become available. It may not be new, but it is fun: the panorama function. By moving the camera from left to right, the Casio EX-ZR300 can capture panorama shots up to 360 degrees. The Exilim camera also offers a 1cm macro function. Additionally, the Casio Exilim EX-ZR300 is equipped with a Full HD 1080p video function. A separate video button allows you to start recording at anytime.

Image quality of the Casio EX-ZR300
Despite the sensitive CMOS sensor, that is supposed to limit the amount of noise, there is noise visible on many photos. Up to ISO 800 is perfectly usable, above that and the end result is strongly affected by noise suppression. That is too bad, because the photo loses detail. For a top model we would expect that Casio would have this better under control. Nevertheless, the overall image quality is fine for a compact camera. The autofocus does a good job and the colors are clear and vivid. The standard white balance is sufficient in most cases. Chromatic aberration is not as apparent as with its predecessor, and thanks to the many different functions, the camera offers diverse solutions in bad lighting situations. Sometimes there is a bit of edge blur in the corners of the photo. The optical zoom is functional, as well as the SR Zoom. The digital zoom offers little added value and is clearly at the expense of the image quality.

Casio Exilim EX-ZR300 review conclusion
The Casio Exilim EX-ZR300 is, partially due to its unbelievable speed, a very nice camera to shoot with. The camera has a compact, stylish design that is comfortable to handle. The buttons are logically arranged, and thanks to the settings dial and its functions, the Casio ZR300 can be easily operated according to one’s preferences by amateur as well as passionate photographers. The sensitive 16 megapixel CMOS sensor, the powerful Exilim Engine HS image processor, and the High Speed autofocus system make the Casio Exilim ZR300 designed entirely for High Speed photography. The Casio camera with 24mm wide-angle delivers fine image quality. It is a wonderful Christmas present for the entire family. The EX-ZR300 has been available for two months for a retail price of around €250 Euros. For that price, the Casio Exilim camera delivers a lot of photography fun!
