|Canon EOS 650D review
Canon EOS 650D SLR camera review : Canon has long been a master of digital SLR photography. Halfway through this year, Canon introduced a new DSLR camera for amateur photographers. The Canon EOS 650D offers high image quality and is a top entry-level SLR camera, and even challenges the competition with advanced system cameras (without mirror). The advantage of a system camera is that it combines high image quality with a compact design. Because the EOS 650D has a mirror, the camera is a lot less compact, so that the advantages are found on other fronts. We studied the EOS 650D, and we used it together with the versatile EF 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens at a wedding in Turkey. |
Canon EOS 650D review
The Canon EOS 650D, also named the EOS Rebel T4i in the U.S., has an 18 megapixel APS-CMOS sensor, a 9-point autofocus system and a DIGIC 5 processor. Those are good specifications, but they are not what make the EOS 650D special. This Canon reflex camera is the first digital SLR camera with a touchscreen, 3-inch tilting display with 1,040,000-dots, which makes camera operation much more intuitive. Additionally, the Canon EOS 650D is equipped with a Hybrid AF system, so that operation via Live View runs a lot faster than it did in the EOS 600D. ISO sensitivity has also increased, resulting in an ISO range of 100 to 12.800 (extendable to ISO 25.600). The possibility of recording Full HD videos with continuous autofocus is also a new addition.
Review Canon EOS 650D
Touchscreen operation is a valuable addition, the interface runs smoothly and quickly and reviewing photos and videos is much more pleasant via the touchscreen. Thanks to the new Hybrid AF system, the EOS 650D is able to shoot photos almost twice as fast in Live View mode – compared with the EOS 600D. That sounds nice, but in practice, the speed did not seem to be quite fast enough. Shooting photos via the optical viewfinder goes a lot faster; unfortunately, the Pentamirror offers a range of nearly 95%, which mean you have to take into consideration that there always be just a bit more on your photo than you expect when making up your composition. Starting up the camera also takes quite a bit of time, due to the sensor cleaning – which you can always stop in the middle.
Canon 650D image quality
Canon EOS SLR cameras are known for their high image quality. The EOS 650D is no exception; the camera delivers excellent photos and offers many more possibilities than previous models. The resolution is one of the best in its class. With the hybrid autofocus system and the possibility of taking continuous shots with a speed of 5 images per second, up to a maximum of 22 images – you can take beautiful photos. The extensive ISO range makes it possible to take lively, clear photos in low-light circumstances. The camera makes excellent images up to ISO 6400. Color representation and white balance are good to very good. Contrasts look good and there is hardly any chromatic aberration. Personally, I would like to see the photos a bit sharper, but they are easy to adjust with photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop.
Canon EOS 650D test conclusion
The 18 megapixel EOS 650D is an excellent digital SLR camera for amateur as well as advanced photographers. The camera has an excellent grip and the image quality belongs to the best in its class. There is full manual control in photo as well as video mode and the camera is full of advanced options and possibilities. The new Hybrid AF system makes it possible to apply continuous AF in video recordings, a valuable addition in a time when high quality video recordings are becoming increasingly important. Unfortunately Canon has not completely succeeded in making the Live View mode run quickly. At any rate, it depends on with what you compare it. Compared with the EOS 600D, we must say that it is a substantial improvement. However, the camera also has to compete with compact system cameras, with which you can shoot much faster in Live View mode. The touchscreen display has been added to an EOS camera for the first time, it works well and it is unique for an SLR. You pay just over € 600 for the EOS 650D body, and this gives you a solid, powerful SLR camera that offers sufficient possibilities for ambitious photographers.
