SamsungSamsung NX20 system camera review : Last quarter, Samsung introduced a new NX system camera. The compact Samsung NX20 is equipped with a large APS-C CMOS sensor with a resolution of 20.3 megapixels. Next to the light-sensitive sensor and a fast shutter speed of 1/8.000, the Samsung system camera is equipped with various functions that are also found in Samsung smartphones. The Samsung NX20 has a clear, 3" tilting AMOLED display. Wi-Fi and GPS functions are also integrated in the camera, for photo sharing via the internet and showing the locations where the photos were shot. We tested the Samsung NX20 for quite a while, during a 3.500 kilometer long trip through Turkey.

Samsung NX20 review
The Samsung NX20 is the successor to the year and a half older NX11, and is fashionably equipped with the same 18-55mm i-Function lens. The i-Function button on the side of the lens gives the photographer the possibility of adjusting settings quickly, such as the shutter speed, f-stop, white balance, and the ISO-value. It is an ideal function which you will undoubtedly use frequently. The camera resolution has increased from 14.6 to 20.3 megapixels and the shutter speed of 1/8.000 is also faster than before. Further, the built-in Wi-Fi function is newly integrated in the Samsung NX20. Actually, the Samsung NX20 is the first system camera that supports Wi-Fi, which makes photo sharing a lot faster.

Review Samsung NX20
The APS-C sensor is compared with the small Micro Four Thirds sensor by Olympus and Panasonic a lot larger. That also increases the total format of the camera. The advantage is actually that the image sensor allows more light in, so that there is less noise and a larger dynamic range, which results in higher-quality shots. The fast shutter speed of 1/8.000 makes it possible to shoot photos at different speeds and lighting. The Samsung NX20 offers an ISO range of 100 - 12.800. Up to ISO 3.200 is very usable, but when using the last two steps, the photos clearly show more noise.

Samsung NX20 image quality
In full resolution, the Samsung NX20 can take continuous shots up to a maximum of 11 JPEG or 8 RAW at a speed of 8 frames per second. Additionally, the Samsung NX20 is equipped with a Burst Mode, so that in a resolution of 5 megapixels, a maximum of 30 successive shots can be made at a speed of 30fps and with a shutter lag of only 40 milliseconds. The light-sensitive lens in combination with the fast autofocus and the i-Function lens allow the Samsung NX20 to simply take clear, noiseless photos with nice, true-to-life colors. Even in low light or with fast moving subjects, the Samsung NX20 delivers high-quality photos. The overall image quality is simply great.

Samsung NX20 display & viewfinder
For getting the composition right and reviewing photos and videos, the Samsung NX20 is equipped with a tilting display, with the use of the AMOLED technology that Samsung already implemented a few years ago in its smartphones. The 3" display is clear and can also be completely folded in, so that the display can never be damaged during travel. The Samsung NX20 is also equipped with a 1.44k resolution electronic viewfinder. Through an integrated eye sensor, the camera knows when you are looking through the viewfinder, so that the display is turned off automatically, and the viewfinder is activated.

Samsung NX20 camera functions
Next to the familiar settings possibilities via the P, A, S and M modes, the Samsung NX20 is also equipped with a C mode. This can be selected via the settings dial and gives the photographer the possibility to set personal shooting modes. There is also a scene mode with a variety of 16 shooting situations. There are also interesting camera filters at hand for taking artistic photos. The Samsung NX20 is easy to operate, but if you want to switch over from a scene to a filter, you have to use the settings dial at the top of the camera. This is a bit cumbersome; it is too bad that the filters cannot be selected in the Scene mode. Taking Panorama, 3D, and audio photos is also possible. These can be easily selected via the Scene mode. Via the separate video mode, you can also record Full HD 1080p videos.

Samsung NX20 lenses
Samsung designed special NX lenses for the NX system cameras. The NX lens assortment includes a set of 9 lenses. The Samsung NX20 comes with the fashionable 18-55mm i-Function lens. Additionally, there are various lenses available that are especially designed for macro photography, portrait photography, landscape photography and for shooting high quality video. Photographers that would like to use the camera for specific purposes may find it objectionable that the lens assortment is still limited at the moment, from 16mm wide angle to 200mm telephoto, with a maximum f-stop of f/2.8.

Review Samsung NX20

Samsung NX20 review conclusion
The 20.3 megapixel Samsung NX20 is a fast and user-friendly camera, and it is the first system camera that is equipped with Wi-Fi functionality, for easy photo and video sharing. There is also a GPS module integrated in the camera. The Samsung NX20 feels more robust than competing models, for example, by Olympus and Panasonic. Due to the larger image sensor, the camera delivers better image quality, especially with the use of higher ISO values. The Samsung NX20 takes beautiful pictures with beautiful colors and with the i-Function button on the 18-55mm lens, the photographer can easily change settings. The Samsung NX20 also offers ample possibilities to the beginner photographer. Next to a Smart Auto mode, there is a Scene mode and a Filter mode available. The tilting 3" AMOLED display is clear and easy to read, and there is a 1,44k EVF available. The Samsung NX20 has a lot to offer the advanced as well as the amateur photographer. The Samsung NX20 is available with the fashionable 18-55mm i-Function lens for a retail price of €900 EUR / $1100 USD / £900 GBP. This price makes the camera a lot more expensive than its predecessor. Do not fret, if that is too expensive for you, Samsung has two smaller brothers for you: the Samsung NX210 and the NX1000.
