CanonCanon PowerShot review : In the first quarter of this year, Canon introduced a new entry-level digital camera for amateur photographers and families with a limited budget. The Canon PowerShot A2300 is a 16 megapixel digital camera with a stylish metal body. The sleek design looks elegant and houses a 5x optical zoom lens with a 2.7" LCD display. To compensate for the lack of image stabilization system, the PowerShot A2300 is equipped with Digital IS, so that you can take decent photos in low light conditions. The Canon PowerShot A2300 can record 720p HD resolution videos. We took the user-friendly PowerShot A2300 on the road with us for a practice test.

Canon PowerShot A2300 review
The Canon PowerShot A2300 is the successor to the one-year-older PowerShot A2200, which has a 14 megapixel CCD sensor, instead of 16 megapixels, and is equipped with a 4x optical zoom lens, instead of 5x. The camera body has also improved, the PowerShot A2300’s sleek, metal body looks durable and robust and makes you think that the camera belongs to Canon’s stylish IXUS camera series. The button structure has also been renewed. You notice right away that there is no settings dial, which was somewhat superfluous anyway. The diverse photo modes are easy to adjust. With the simple menu structure and separate Help-button, it is not necessary to consult the user guide. The Canon PowerShot A2300 is literally a point-and-shoot.

Review Canon PowerShot A2300
The 28mm wide-angle lens offers a 5x optical zoom with a range of 28-140mm (35mm equivalent), the zoom mechanism on top of the camera is easy to operate. You can zoom in further, but then the camera starts to use the digital zoom (max 20x). That reduces the quality quite a bit, especially because the camera is not equipped with optical image stabilization. To compensate, the Canon PowerShot A2300 is equipped with Digital IS, in order to prevent undesired camera shake. That is better than nothing, but it does not offer the same quality as an optical image stabilization. The Canon PowerShot A2300 has a 2.7" LCD display with 230k dot resolution. The display colors representation is a bit too dark, and the viewing angle is limited. However, the screen is adequate, and it does compete with similar models. The PowerShot A2300 is pretty fast for a camera in this price range. You can start the camera within two seconds, and the camera has a shutter release lag of 0.2 seconds.

16 megapixel Canon PowerShot A2300
The Canon PowerShot A2300 is equipped with a 16 megapixel CCD image sensor and a Digic 4 image processor. Thanks to the built-in scene recognition, the PowerShot A2300, in the Smart Auto mode, is able to recognize the shooting situation and adjust the suitable settings, such as lighting and white balance, automatically. The Canon PowerShot A2300 also has a powerful flash and face detection, redeye detection, and a blink detection function. Selecting the program mode allows the photographer to personalize various photo settings. There are also several creative filters available, including Fish-eye effect, Miniature effect, Playful effect, Monochrome, Extra lively and Poster effect. You can also select scene programs, such as Portrait, Self-timer, Snow, Fireworks, Low Light, and slow shutter release.

Canon PowerShot A2300 image quality
The Canon PowerShot A2300 delivers good image quality, although this strongly depends on the lighting conditions. The camera has trouble with bad lighting conditions, just as all beginner models. This is partially due to the use of a CCD sensor and the lack of optical image stabilization, but is otherwise compensated by a digital image stabilization, a special ‘Low light' mode and an f-stop of f/2.8. Nevertheless, photos taken in low light circumstances, such as indoors, are a bit grainy. The noise suppression reacts too aggressively sometimes, making details a bit blotchy. Taking the price into consideration, we have little to complain about. The Canon PowerShot A2300 is fast and easy to operate, for the simple capture of memorable moments.

Canon PowerShot A2300 budget camera
The PowerShot A2300 belongs to Canon’s budget camera series. The cheaper and heavier A810 and A1300 both make use of AA batteries and have a simpler design. After the A2300 are the A2400 IS, A3400 IS and the A4000 IS. The PowerShot A2300 is identical to the A2400 IS, with the exception of the optical image stabilization. The A3400 IS has a touch screen and the A4000 IS is equipped with a large 3" display and a 8x optical zoom lens. The PowerShot A2300 has a suggested retail price of €140 Euros. The camera is available online from €85 Euros. If you have a bigger budget, then its bigger brother with optical image stabilization, the PowerShot A2400 IS, is available for €25 Euros more.

Canon PowerShot A2300 review conclusion
The Canon PowerShot A2300 is an easy-to-operate digital camera with a 16 megapixel CCD sensor and a 5x optical zoom lens. The stylish metal body was kept very compact so that the camera is easy to take with you. If you have a limited budget or if you are just looking for a simple beginner model camera, then the PowerShot A2300 is a good choice. The image quality is good, the camera has several automatic and creative photo and video functions. If you are prepared to spend a bit more money on your digital camera, then its bigger brother, the PowerShot A2400 IS, with optical image stabilization, is a good option.
