Sony CyberShot DSC-HX20V review : The Sony CyberShot DSC-HX20V has been available in stores for two months. It is about time that we take a closer look at this camera. The Sony CyberShot DSC-HX20V is an advanced digital compact camera with an 18.2 megapixel Exmor R CMOS image sensor. Sony’s H-series is known for their powerful G-lens, which is also available on the DSC-HX20V. The 25mm wide-angle lens with 20x optical zoom makes the Sony CyberShot DSC-HX20V an ideal camera to travel with. Additionally, the camera is equipped with a GPS log registration, Sweep Panorama, a 3D function and a Full HD 50p video function. The Sony CyberShot DSC-HX20V is available in two different colors: black and brown. We tested the black version.

Sony CyberShot DSC-HX20V review
The Sony CyberShot compact camera assortment is subdivided in a set of three main categories: the DSC-HX20V belongs to the most advanced compact cameras, which are brought together in the ‘High Performance' series. These cameras guarantee high quality shots and complete manual control. The camera is comfortable to handle and is easy to operate. What is noticeable during photography is that the placement of the flash on the DSC-HX20V is on the top left side of the camera. Nothing strange so far, only that the pop-up flash pops up unexpectedly and disappears unexpectedly again, which makes you fumble with your finger.

Sony CyberShot DSC-HX20V Review
The Sony CyberShot HX20V, in comparison with its predecessor, the HX10V, has a more powerful zoom lens, with 20x optical zoom instead of 16x. This also extends the digital zoom from 32x to 40x zoom. The wide-angle lens has changed from a 24mm to a 25mm lens with a focal point range of F3.2 (wide angle) to F5.8 (telephoto). The macro function has also been improved; the DSC-HX20V can take impressive macro shots from about 1 cm. There are also manual settings possible, such as focus and contrast settings. The 3" LCD screen has been changed to a TFT Xtra Fine Trublack screen, which is easier to read in sunny circumstances.

Sony CyberShot DSC-HX20V image quality
The Sony CyberShot HX20V has a fast and fluid autofocus system; even in low light, the camera is able to focus quickly. Thanks to the follow focus technology, the focal subject is followed, even when it moves, so that the camera can capture fast action shots. Continual shooting (burst-mode) is also possible, with a speed of 10fps. Color representation is good, as is lighting and dynamic range. The Sony CyberShot DSC-HX20V is equipped with extra high sensitivity technology, for better shots under poor lighting conditions. The noise suppression is a bit too aggressive, making details a bit blotchy. The ISO range is from 100 - 3200. In the Superior auto mode, this can be extended to ISO 12.800.

Sony CyberShot DSC-HX20V camera functions
The Sony CyberShot DSC-HX20V is equipped with numerous creative possibilities. You can easily adjust the color, brightness, and other photo settings. There are also 15 scene modes available as well as 7 artistic image effects, such as Toy Camera, Miniature and Pop-color. The camera is also equipped with advanced technology that simplifies taking high quality images, including backlight correction with HDR and the mode that counteracts movement blur and softens skin tones.

Sony CyberShot DSC-HX20V review conclusion
There is little to criticize in this new Sony High Zoom camera. The Sony CyberShot DSC-HX20V is selling for €370 Euros, which is a bit on the steep side. Additionally, the placement of the flash is thoughtless, and this sure takes some getting used to at first. That is about the only disadvantage, though. The Sony CyberShot DSC-HX20V is fast and easy to operate, and despite its compact body, it has a powerful G-lens with 20x optical zoom. Image quality is good, except for the aggressive noise suppression. Extra functions such as GPS, Sweep Panorama, 3D, and various filter effects make this camera a pleasure to work with. It is a bit pricey to acquire, but the Sony CyberShot DSC-HX20V will bring you long-term pleasure.
