Nikon Coolpix S9200 review

NikonNikon Coolpix S9200 review : Last quarter, Nikon announced a new Superzoom camera. The Nikon Coolpix S9200 is a 16 megapixel digital camera with a very sensitive, backlit CMOS sensor. Thanks to this sensor, the camera receives more light, resulting in improved image quality. Furthermore, the Nikon Coolpix S9200 is equipped with a Nikkor lens with a powerful 18x optical zoom (25-450mm). Such a zoom range without effective vibration reduction is undesirable, and that is why Nikon has equipped the Coolpix S9200 with VR-vibration reduction with lens-shift, which ensures steady shots. We gave the Nikon Coolpix S9200 a test run for quite a while. Our findings can be read in the following Nikon Coolpix S9200 review.

Nikon Coolpix S9200 review
The Coolpix S9200 belongs to Nikon’s Stylish S-series. The Coolpix S-series digital cameras are known for their elegant character, speed, and simplicity, packaged in a slim body. The Nikon Coolpix S9200 and the S9300 are the flagships of the S-Series. The difference between these two cameras is found in the built-in GPS function, which the S9300 has, but the S9200 does not. The available colors are also a bit different. The Nikon Coolpix S9200 is available in silver, black, and brown.

Review Nikon Coolpix S9200
Despite the Superzoom lens, the Nikon Coolpix S9200 camera’s body has remained very compact, especially when you compare this Megazoom camera to the competition. The camera is easy to take with you and has a good grip, so that the Coolpix S9200 sits comfortably in the hand. The 7.5cm TFT LCD monitor with 921.000 focal points is clear and easy to read from different angles. The Clear Color Display technology makes it possible to shoot in bright sunlight.

Thanks to the 18x optical zoom lens, you can shoot action shots from afar as well as close-ups. If the 18x optical zoom is not enough for you, there is another 4x digital zoom available. The Nikon Coolpix S9200 also has a Macro setting for impressive close-ups with a distance as close as 4cm. The Nikon Coolpix S9200 is equipped with a fast and accurate autofocus system with 99 points. Additionally, Subject Tracking AF is available, or rather 'AF with follow subject', that ensures that the camera keeps focusing on the selected subject, even when it moves. Focusing is generally fast and supple. However, starting up the camera takes quite a bit of time. If you want to take a photo quickly and the camera is still switched off, then there is a big chance that the subject will already have disappeared once the camera is finally ready to shoot.

Nikon Coolpix S9200 photo functions
The Nikon Coolpix S9200 digital compact camera has diverse photo functions that improve image quality. In the HDR-setting, the camera combines two shots that were made with different lighting, into one image with a very wide dynamic range and rich colors. The Nikon Coolpix S9200 can also take fast continuous shots. The camera can take up to seven consecutive shots with a speed of 6 images per second. Other photo functions of the Nikon Coolpix S9200 are a panorama mode (180˚ and 360˚), a 3D photo mode and diverse creative filter effects, among others.

Nikon Coolpix S9200 review conclusion
The Nikon Coolpix S9200 is a 16 megapixel camera with an 18x optical zoom lens, packaged in an enormously compact and slim camera body. The control and the menu is clear and well organized. The camera is comfortable to hold and the image quality is simply good. From ISO 1600, noise does start to play a role, but this is no different from competing models from other manufacturers. We have little to comment on the white balance and the color representation. The biggest disadvantage for me personally is the startup time, which makes taking spontaneous action shots difficult. Overall, the Nikon Coolpix S9200 is a good digital camera with a simple operation. The camera is currently available for €270 Euro.
