OlympusOlympus SZ-31MR review : The Olympus SZ-series, known for its powerful zoom lenses, is part of the so-called Traveler digital cameras. Earlier this year, Olympus added a new top model to its popular Super-Zoom series. The Olympus SZ-31MR is the successor to the one-year-old SZ-30MR. Equipped with a 24x optical zoom lens, a 16 megapixel illuminated CMOS sensor, iHS technologies and a Full HD video function, the Olympus SZ-31MR is designed for travelers. Whether you go for a long vacation or a day trip, the Olympus SZ-31MR is a compact, lightweight camera to take with you and offers sufficient functionality in order to capture everyday subjects. We brought the Olympus SZ-31MR with us on trip through Turkey in order to test this zoom camera some more in practice.

Olympus SZ-31MR review
Despite the 24x optical wide-angle zoom lens (25-600mm), the Olympus SZ-31MR is still quite compact; the SZ-31MR is one of the most compact Super Zoom cameras that are currently available. Thereby the new Olympus SZ-31MR does not distinguish itself from the one-year-old SZ-30MR, which also has a 24x zoom lens. The differences are found, among others, in the LCD screen, which is a lot clearer with 920.000 pixels and is sensitive to touch. The 7.6 cm touchscreen is simple to operate and includes Tap Control, so that you can focus and take shots by tapping the screen. Moreover, focusing is faster than previously, thanks to an improved autofocus.

Review Olympus SZ-31MR - iHS technologies
Olympus’ so-called iHS technologies are also new. iHS stands for 'Intelligence', 'High Sensitivity' and 'High Speed'. The Olympus SZ-31MR has a fast autofocus and the possibility to make fast successive shots, and combine them with iHS. This results in photos with less noise and better color representation. Even night shots and other difficult photo circumstances are captured better than previously thanks to the new iHS technologies. Additionally, the HDR-backlight correction function works to ensure well-lit photos, even in situations with backlight.

Multi Recording with the Olympus SZ-31MR
Just like its predecessor, the Olympus SZ-31MR has a Multi Recording (MR) function. The MR-function makes it possible to make a 1080p Full HD video recording and simultaneously capture 16 Megapixel photos. You take a photo with a tap on the screen, while recording. This way you can also change the focal point, the shutter speed and the zoom factor, all without interrupting the video recording. Additionally, the Olympus SZ-31MR is equipped with a Multi-Motion Movie stabilization and double image stabilization, in order to make sharp video recordings, without bothersome image distortions.

Olympus SZ-31MR camera functions
Other functions of the user-friendly Olympus SZ-31MR are, among others, Live Guide, with which you can adjust in real-time settings such as fading the background and adjusting the colors. There is also the advanced i-Auto mode and AF-tracking functions, with which the camera itself chooses the optimal settings and focuses. The camera also has a Macro mode, Smart Panorama, a 3D photo function and a Beauty-make up mode. To complete the story there are a mere seventeen scene programs and twelve different Magic filters available, to make photos and videos with fun effects.

Olympus SZ-31MR review conclusion
The Olympus SZ-31MR is an ultra-compact digital camera with an enormous zoom range and a complete metal body. This Super Zoom camera is easy to operate with the clear and sensitive touch screen and has innovative functions, such as the iHS technologies and the Multi Recording function. The Olympus SZ-31MR also has an improved autofocus. Next to taking 16 Megapixel photos, there is also a 1080p Full HD video function available. Different photo modes allow for creativity. It is a pleasure to shoot with the Olympus SZ-31MR, the photos are colorful and sharp. The photos appear even better on the computer than on the camera screen. The Olympus SZ-31MR has been available for one month for €320 Euro / £250 GBP / $400 USD.
