CanonInformation on Canon cameras with Wireless LAN function : Some of the newly released digital compact cameras from Canon feature Wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) technology. These Wi-Fi cameras offer users many ways to connect and to share pictures and movies with other electronic devices and over the internet. You can share digital content wirelessly with other Canon Wi-Fi cameras; pair your Canon camera with a Smartphone to store photographs and to upload them to your favorite social network websites. Or upload your pictures directly using the camera’s interface and your home’s Wireless LAN internet connection. With the new Canon IXUS 240 HS and Canon IXUS 510 HS these great features come available for you.

The table below lists the required technical specifications for each type of connection and also includes important information on the use of the Wireless LAN function. It explains what type of connections are possible using a Canon Wi-Fi camera and which other mobile devices, software and services are compatible with the wireless function. Please note that Android devices will be supported after April 2012.

Wi-Fi Connections
Wi-Fi Ad hoc mode does not require a Wi-Fi access point and allows the Canon Wi-Fi camera to connect directly to the target device. The target device must also be compatible with Wi-Fi Ad hoc mode. The Wi-Fi Infrastructure mode uses at least one main Wi-Fi access point to which these cameras must be connected in order to communicate with other Wi-Fi capable devices. Even though these cameras support connectivity to Wi-Fi access points, they cannot be used in wireless networks such as public wireless hotspots which require the use of a web browser for authentication.

It is possible to send up to 50 pictures in one send operation. The new Canon Wi-Fi cameras all feature an automatic image resize option in case full resolution image transfer is not needed. It is also possible to transmit HD videos as long as the total recording time is within 2 minutes. All movie types created with these Wi-Fi cameras can be transferred including Full HD movies, Super Slow Motion Movies and Movie Digest clips.

Wi-Fi

Smartphones & Tablet
The following mobile devices are compatible for wireless connection in both Ad hoc and Infrastructure modes; Apple iPad, iPad 2, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (4th generation). The installed software version must be iOS 4.3 or higher and the new Canon Camera Window app must be installed. Apple devices cannot save or play back Full HD 1080p movies recorded with these Canon Wi-Fi cameras (all other movie types are supported). However, it is possible to use these target devices to upload Full HD movies online.

Facebook & YouTube
When using a mobile device, with the Canon Camera Window app installed, to upload pictures from a connected Canon Wi-Fi camera, those pictures will be saved directly to selected online social media sites like Facebook or YouTube and with the option to add a comment while uploading to it.
