NikonNikon Coolpix review : Nikon has renewed its Coolpix digital camera series with a new compact camera, the Nikon Coolpix S80. It is a new digital camera that is especially riding on its ‘looks’, and it is also equipped with a very fine display. It is a compact digital camera for the trendy photographer with an eye for design, comparable to Canon’s successful IXUS camera line. The Nikon Coolpix S80 is not a typical photographer’s choice, but it is more meant for those that is looking for ease, wanting to take snapshots now and then while on vacation, or of family of friends. The Nikon Coolpix S80 is operated completely automatically with support from Nikon’s Vibration Reduction system, among others.

VR stabilization ensures for hand-held shooting with longer shutter times, without having to worry about movement blur. In fact, it has a sort of built-in tripod. The Nikon Coolpix S80 camera has a built-in optical zoom lens with a range of 5x. In practice, this means that the dimensions of the Nikon Coolpix S80 will never become bigger than when it is switched off. The 35-175mm range is enough to be able to shoot in many situations.

Nikon Coolpix S80 camera display
The 3.5-inch display on the back of the Nikon Coolpix S80 camera is of the OLED type, and has touchscreen operation. OLED means Organic LED, and is used for various applications such as mobile phones, MP-3 players, etc. It is expected that OLED will also be applied in large screen formats, but that is still too expensive using current technology. An advantage of OLED is that back lighting is no longer necessary, and the viewing angle has increased considerably. The display quality on this new Coolpix camera is at a very high level.

Nikon Coolpix S80 design camera
The fact that the Nikon Coolpix S80 digital camera is not aimed at photographers is obvious in the amount of pixels it has. With 14.1 Megapixels there is clearly overkill, and in our opinion, only Nikon’s marketing department must be happy with this amount. In terms of image quality, there is no reason to offer such high resolutions, but it looks good on the technical specification list of the new Nikon Coolpix S80 digital camera.

Review Nikon Coolpix S80
This new Nikon Coolpix S80 camera’s control is based on touchscreen control. Focusing and shooting can be executed with a few touches of the finger. Even editing the images can be done in the camera with the touchscreen. The built-in filters give the creative photographer the necessary tools to make something nice. Using a computer or notebook afterwards is no longer necessary. The new Nikon processor handles the pictures at great speed, so that there is hardly any delay.

Nikon Coolpix S80 review
If you want to stay trendy as a camera manufacturer, you will certainly emphasize the so-called High Definition (HD) video recording. The Nikon Coolpix S80 is also equipped with this possibility, and supports a HD video resolution of 720p (1280 x 960 pixels). Sound is recorded in stereo, and via the HDMI interface, photos and HD video clips can be displayed on an HDTV. It is expected that the Nikon Coolpix S80 will be fully demonstrated during the Photokina 2010 show in Cologne, Germany. This biannual digital imaging event offers everything in terms of image for photography fans. Next to the Nikon Coolpix S80, the Nikon lenses, Nikon DSLR cameras and other Nikon accessories will be on display.
