NikonNikon AF-S 28-300mm lens review : The introduction of the new Nikon AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR zoom lens is surprising. There were rumors previously that such a Nikon lens was tested by a professional photographer in the US, but the first reports were still pretty vague. When I first held the Nikon 28-300mm in my hands, I immediately compared it to a Canon lens with a similar focal range. The big difference is actually the weight of the lens. The Canon megazoom lens weighs at least 1600 grams, the Nikon AF-S 28-300mm weighs half that amount, making it easier to carry around. The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm lens weighs about 800 grams.

A zoom range of almost 11x is of course a great advantage when you want to have an all-round lens at hand. As a photographer you can often end up in situations when different focal ranges are required, and sometimes changing lenses is not an option. The Nikon DX photographers already had a popular 28-200mm lens to choose, but now the Nikon FX-camera owners can also choose for an all-round lens. The new ‘Lock’ button is also handy, which locks the zoom lens at 28mm wide angle. Such a function is typically the response to users’ demand, a sign that Nikon is actively listening and reacting.

The short focus distance of 50cm throughout the entire zoom range is ideal for focal range flexibility. Nikon’s second generation Vibration Reduction system offers an extra security in shooting with slower shutter speed times. Nikon’s VRII stabilization system has two stabilization modes, active and normal. An extra advantage is that the viewfinder appears calmer and facilitates composition and focusing accurately.

As an FX photographer, I am curious about the optical quality of this mega zoom lens. The Nikon 28-300mm seems to me to be an ideal travel lens that can quickly be used as a base lens. The new Nikon lens will shortly be tested thoroughly in the DIWA Lab for technical aspects and as soon as we have the opportunity, we will thoroughly test this lens in practice. As soon as the test results are ready, an in-depth Nikon AF-S 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens review will be published.
