NikonNikon Coolpix S5100 review : The new Nikon Coolpix S5100 lies in between the Coolpix S4000 and the S6000, in terms of numbering. This also seems to be the case in terms of camera specifications. With 5x optical zoom and a range of 28-140 mm (35mm equivalent), connected to a CCD image sensor with an effective resolution of 12.2 Megapixels, the Nikon S5100 fits nicely in between them. It is Nikon’s answer to the storm of relatively cheap entry-level cameras that are being offered by virtually every manufacturer on every street corner. It is difficult for a manufacturer to distinguish itself in this price segment. Nikon does this by equipping the camera with a new image processor.

Nikon Coolpix S5100 camera processor
The new EXPEED 2 processor is found in the Nikon Coolpix S5100 camera. The original EXPEED processor was equipped with the most recent technical knowledge and image information, in order to keep the image quality at its highest. EXPEED 2 adds a bit extra, with video and a better performance of the high ISOs. The new processor should lead to an improved image quality and performance in image processing.

Nikon S5100 delivered with ViewNX 2 software
The Nikon S5100 digital camera is delivered with the new version of ViewNX software. ViewNX 2 is now delivered with all Nikon cameras, compact as well as DSLR, and guarantees a user-friendly method of image editing and management. Based on ViewNX, version 2, it especially adds extra functionality in terms of video editing. This technique was derived directly from the experience that Nikon had with its DSLR cameras with video function. The creative amateur photographer can live it up with this software.

Allround photography with the Nikon Coolpix S5100
The Nikon Coolpix S5100 is a light weight camera with compact dimensions. It is a camera that you can carry in your pocket just like your cell phone and use at any time to capture a favorite moment. The wide angle zoom with a light tele of 140mm makes it possible to shoot all-round. It is handy for capturing family portraits indoors, but also practical to capture wide landscapes during a weekend trip.

Optical image stabilisation on the Nikon Coolpix S5100
The 5x optical zoom is supported by a built-in optical image stabilizer (VR). It is very pleasant to shoot with such image stabilization, especially in low light conditions. It reduces effective movement blur and leads to a sharper end result. The Nikon S5100 also automatically detects if the camera is on a tripod or hand-held. Such detection optimizes the camera settings.

Nikon Coolpix S5100 photo functions
For the rest, the Nikon Coolpix S5100 speaks for itself. It is a relatively cheaply priced compact camera for the amateur photographer, with the emphasis on photography without having to think. The Nikon S5100 camera is equipped with a fast image processor which leads to an easy-going form of photography. You don’t notice the photo or 720p video clip processing. The camera is also equipped with functions such as the face detection in Face Zoom-in, which allows you to make nice portraits. The 18 built-in scenes, of which 6 are connected to the automatic scene selector, ensure that the camera will always have an optimum setting available to guarantee optimum lighting.

Nikon S5100 test

Nikon Coolpix S5100 review
The Photokina show in Cologne, Germany, will open its doors to the public between September 21st and 26th. It is the world’s largest imaging event, and all products will be shown that will be introduced worldwide in the coming months. Nikon will of course be present, and will demonstrate its complete assortment, including the new Nikon Coolpix S5100. As soon as we receive a Nikon Coolpix S5100 test camera, we will test it thoroughly in practice and in the DIWA Lab. As soon as the test data is analyzed, a Nikon Coolpix S5100 review will be published, next to a high resolution photo gallery.
