SonySony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX5 review : Although its appearance doesn’t betray it, the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX5 is unique in its kind. In the first place, the Sony HX5 distinguishes itself with its image sensor. While 99% of compact cameras are equipped with a standard CCD sensor, the Sony DSC-HX5 is equipped with a so-called back-illuminated CMOS sensor. Additionally, this compact camera has a 10x optical zoom lens with a 25m wide angle, optical SteadyShot, AVCHD Full HD video (1920x1080 pixels) and the impressively performing Sweep Panorama function.

Sony Cyber-Shot review
The top of the Sony Cyber-Shot HX5 gives direct access to the most important programs. The well-known command-dial is placed in a pleasant location, all the way to the side, on top of the handgrip. The size of the pictograms on the settings dial is a bit on the small side, and I can imagine that it may be difficult to read for some. There is a ring placed around the shutter release button which gives access to the 10x optical zoom lens. Zooming is quick, but it is not easy to zoom in with precision. There is some delay when the zoom button is released. Zooming then continues a bit, so it becomes difficult to frame precisely.

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX5 review
The 10x zoom range gives the photographer a lot of freedom to capture the subjects around him. The Sony Cyber-Shot HX5 is not equipped with the biggest zoom range such as the Canon en Panasonic mega zoom cameras, but the range of 25-250 is more than enough with its wide angle for all round photography. The zoom lens does well in practice. The wide angle has little noticeable distortion, and only some chromatic aberration is visible on the edges of the image. The tele position also looks good, and the distortion and chromatic aberration are under control here as well.

Sony Cyber-Shot review
The bottom of the camera has a little lid that covers the compartment for the Li-Ion battery and the memory card. Additionally, the Sony Cyber-Shot camera has a special interface in which a special cable with USB and video or a HDMI-adapter can be inserted. The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX5 is a camera with a lot of functionality. The camera has been extensively tested on technical aspects in the special DIWA lab, and combined with our practical test, we arrive at a balanced conclusion. Our findings can be read in the next Sony DSC-HX5 review.
