Google Android operating system : As an enthusiastic consumer you have just figured out that the next cell phone that you will purchase should come equipped with Google Android. So now you decide to leave your lazy internet chair to go and have a look in the telecom shop around the corner. Just by poking around, you already noticed that Android is not just Android, but that there’s Google Android 2.0, Android 1.5, or was it Android 1.6? And more questions come up: Are all Android phones equipped with a multi-touch function, or does that depend on the telephone manufacturer? Now you realize that things are not getting any clearer. One thing is for sure: Google Android OS is hot!
Google Android OS And that is the only thing that is clear right now. The Android operating system seems to receive unconditional support from the telephone manufacturers and not unimportantly, the providers. Therefore, the path seems to be cleared for a successful worldwide acceptation of Google Android and its related services. Still, at this moment it remains unclear which version of Android you will end up with. Some manufacturers use superlatives to describe Android 1.5, while others, for example the Motorola DROID, go for Android 2.0, without being less successful.
Android Software functions Information about the different functions in the Android OS tells us, for example, that the multi-touch function is supported by Android 2.0, but that this function is still inactive in the Motorola DROID Smartphone. Meanwhile, one of the most inexpensive Android phones, the HTC Eris, does support the multi-touch function. A galling detail of the HTC DROID Eris is that it uses an ‘older’ Android 1.5 OS. Such inconsistency is obstructive for the transparent establishment of Android as an operating system for the masses. Of course it helps that Google Android is being widely promoted by the cell phone industry, but it would be better without this maze of Android versions with varying active and inactive functions…
