Red Dot Award goes to the Minox Spy camera : So, what is it worth? Minox, once known for its innovative, analogue camera design, has received a Red Dot award for its Minox Digital Spy Camera. We came across the Minox Spy Camera during one of the digital imaging events such as PMA and Photokina, and as a professional photographer you cannot respectably take a Spy camera like that seriously anymore. Around 1935 Walter Zapp had the idea to design an ultra compact camera. The idea was actually simple, but what it boiled down to was that the small camera was to be a precision instrument. In 1938, Walter found a manufacturer that wanted to produce his design and the first Minox camera became a fact.

The following years were successful years for Minox with its diverse, interesting and innovative cameras. With the conversion to digital photography, there is no precision with Minox anymore, but we are ‘surprised’ each time when they bring out a new camera that we have already seen. The power they had in the past is no longer present. The compact digital classic cameras such as the Rolleiflex MiniDigi, Hasselblad SWC and Contax I have more of a gadget status than that of a serious digital camera, such as the original Hasselblad and Leica cameras have.

When the news appeared that the Red Dot Award was given to a camera that is only and exclusively intended to be an espionage camera, the only thing that we can do is give a deep sigh. Minox, manufacturer of cameras such as the Minox 35GT and 35GL, receives recognition for a digital Spy Camera. Hmph...
