CanonCanon EOS 500D SLR camera review : In a slight up-tempo, Canon has introduced a new digital SLR, the Canon EOS 500D. At this time, the Canon 500D is ranked in between several existing EOS cameras such as the 1000D / 450D and the EOS 50D. This is already the sixth generation EOS digital SLR camera since the EOS 300D was introduced in 2003. In the meantime, a lot has been improved and renewed, and looking back, it is impressive to see how much has changed in a short period of time, which has certainly added to the image quality.

Canon 500D review - Camera body
If you are familiar with the EOS 450D, the Canon 500D may seem like a déjà vu. The Canon EOS 500D has an almost identical housing as that of the 450D, and it are only small details that make the difference. The housing comprises of more than one part, among which a stainless steel frame surrounded by a high-quality plastic finish. If you take the camera into your hand, you can feel the plastic. However, thanks to the somewhat rougher surface, it does not come across as feeling cheap. The weight (524 gram) and the dimensions (192x98x62mm) are equal to those of the 450D, ranking the 500D somewhere in the middle when compared to its competitors.

Canon 500D review - Live View LCD monitor
The operation of a digital SLR is been going through quite a change lately. With the arrival of large LCD monitors and Live View, the monitor is bound to start playing a much bigger role. The small displays on top of Canon cameras seem to disappear, also due to the more compact size of the cameras. And since the new monitors are at least 3 inches in size, a wealth of information can be displayed in order to make the user interface even more graphical, just as is the case with the Canon EOS 500D. A small disadvantage is the increased energy consumption, since the monitor will be activated a lot more often.

Review Canon 500D including a DIWA Labs test
Plenty of ingredients to put some time and effort into a new DSLR review. The Canon EOS 500D comes as a kit, among others, with the new 18-200mm IS lens. The Canon EOS 500D including the EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens has been extensively technically tested in the DIWA lab, and at the same time a similar sample was tested in practice. Both results are combined in order to obtain a balanced verdict. Our findings can be read in the following Canon 500D review.
