 Canon SX200 IS test photos : Just before the PMA 2009 kicked off, Canon introduced its version of a compact Megazoom camera. Although Canon did have various Megazoom cameras in their assortment, these were cameras with a relatively bigger size. Panasonic was the successful leader in this field. The lack of response to the Panasonic TZ series, which has already been a success for years now, surprised us highly. Now, Canon sets out to call a halt to Panasonic's leading position; lonely at the top, with the launch of the new Canon PowerShot SX200 IS. The Canon SX200 IS is a 12.1 Megapixel camera with a 12x optical zoom lens on board, providing a range of 28-336mm. This combination is supported by Canon's optical image stabilization.

Although its multiplying factor is equal to that of the Panasonic LUMIX TZ7, Panasonic managed to squeeze a tad more wide-angle out of it: 25-300mm. The technical test results of both cameras will soon become available from our DIWA Lab, and we will be able to come up with a balanced comparison. Testing the Canon PowerShot SX200 IS does not only take place in the DIWA Lab; also in practice a large number of test samples are captured. A strong trump of the Canon PowerShot SX200 IS camera is the integrated DIGIC-4 processor, coming straight from the high quality EOS digital SLR cameras. The powerful DIGIC-4 processor provides extra ease through the motion detection technology and Servo-AF, both aiming at focusing on moving subjects. Moreover, the face detection technology has improved. Taking pictures using the self-timer is child's play now, thanks to the FaceSelf-timer. This technique provides a very simple solution; the camera waits until the user is visible before actually making the picture. Another novelty is blink detection; a technique that recognizes closed eyes when making portraits, in which case it will actually prevent taking the picture.

The Canon PowerShot SX200 IS test photos were taken in Purmerend, the Netherlands with a full production camera which means that this camera is equal to the model that the consumer can expect to purchase. Our DIWA camera test lab will soon test the Canon SX200 IS camera under laboratory circumstances from a technical viewpoint.
