CanonCanon EOS 50D SLR camera review : With the introduction of the Canon EOS 50D I immediately presumed this would be the successor to the 40D, however Canon fiercely denied this. The Canon 50D should be considered as a stand-alone DSLR equipped with innovative new techniques. One of which is a newly developed 15.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor that should deliver a better signal/noise ratio despite its higher resolution, whilst the other is a fast DIGIC IV processor that is integrated in the 50D. The Canon EOS 50D aims to redefine the quality standard, and thus the camera enters the higher segment.

Canon EOS 50D review

Canon EOS 50D versus EOS 40D
Those who are familiar with the EOS 40D, will immediately perceive the resemblance when holding the Canon EOS 50D for the first time. In fact, the only difference at the front seems to be the type indication. The back of the EOS 50D differs more significantly, although this only seems due to the different monitor compared to the 40D. Other than that, it's only small details such as a different color of the command dial and extra applied functionality of buttons. There's a lot to explain for the salesman, when both cameras are lined up on the shelf in his shop.

Canon EOS 50D test
The changes made to the back of the 40D are all adopted by the Canon EOS 50D. Or at least, as far as the buttons are concerned. The 3 inch LCD monitor is completely redesigned and renewed, and offers a significantly increased resolution (920,000 instead of 230,000 dots) which truly adds to the reproduction. Additionally, an improved coating serves as anti-reflex layer. And on top of that, the Live View function of the monitor has been enhanced with contrast AF and face detection that is also linked to it. The AF-ON, top right next to the thumb grip, is quite remarkable. It lets you set the focus independently of the shutter release, which comes in very handy during action photography. It takes time getting used to, but in practice it might help you to work faster, and it will be more convenient.

Canon 50D review - Test in practise & DIWA Labs test
I had the Canon EOS 50D in my possession for a short period of time and I was able to test it in practice. Besides that, a test sample of the Canon 50D in combination with the Canon EF-S 18-200 mm f/3.5-f5.6 IS was intensively tested in our DIWA test lab. The results of this test are evaluated, and together with the test in practice, we have come to a reliable camera test. My findings can be read in the following Canon EOS 50D review.
