Leica digital system camera at Photokina

LeicaLeica system camera at Photokina 2008 : Besides Panasonic’s surprising news for the visitors of the Photokina show, Leica also made itself heard. Leica is a company with an excellent reputation, although you would not actually expect surprises of them. However, at the Photokina 2008, Leica presented the company as a brand with actual world fame. Who would expect Leica to present an entirely new digital camera system in addition to a twosome compact cameras (C-Lux 3 and D-Lux 4) and a somewhat dull Leica M8.2? A genuine surprise, to say the very least, and an interesting new development for the professional photography market. The Leica S2 is a much larger format system camera than the usual Leica assortment, and the camera features a gigantic sensor sized 30 x 45mm.

Leica S2 digital system camera
The huge image sensor (approximately 56% larger than a 35mm format sensor) has been developed and manufactured by Kodak, especially for Leica. The first rumours claimed a middle format camera, in fact the image ratio is 3:2 with which Leica raises professional DSLR photography to a higher platform. The Leica S2 is expected to become available around August 2008. Leica delivers a smart and unsurpassed high level DSLR system with a resolution of 37.5 megapixels, frame speed of around 1.5 frames per second, waterproof housing, an integrated processor (Maestro) and the incredible number of nine new lenses from ultra wide angle and macro to specialized tilt and shift lenses!

Leica S2 memory card support
The Leica S2 features a dual card slot offering support to CompactFlash and SDHC format memory cards. Despite the large size of the image sensor, the housing of the Leica S2 is kept extremely compact, in fact, more compact than a digital medium sized camera, and even more compact than a professional DSLR camera. There are no details as of yet on the price-tag of the Leica S2, although we think it will be found on a professional level. We will bring you updates on the Leica S2 as they become available.
