Samsung Electronics publishes Q2 2017 results

Samsung headquarters reports financial results for Q2 2017 : Samsung announced financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2017. Samsung’s revenue for the quarter was KRW 61.00 trillion, an increase of KRW 10.06 trillion YoY, while operating profit for the quarter posted a record KRW 14.07 trillion, an increase of KRW 5.92 trillion YoY. In Q2 2017, the components businesses drove significant earnings growth, both YoY and QoQ, thanks primarily to strong memory demand for high-density DRAMs and SSDs for servers. System LSI contributed to earnings through increased sales of AP and CIS products while the Display Panel business expanded sales of flexible OLED panels for premium smartphones and high-value LCDs under stable market prices.


Samsung Mobile Division reports financial results

Q2 2017 Financial results for Samsung Mobile Division : The IT & Mobile Communications (IM) Division posted KRW 30.01 trillion in consolidated revenue and KRW 4.06 trillion in operating profit for the quarter. Samsung’s earnings significantly increased QoQ driven by the strong sales of the Galaxy S8 flagship phones. These premium smartphones have outsold the Galaxy S7 series in almost all regions, thanks to the new Infinity Display design and enhanced features including water and dust proofing and iris recognition. The overall product mix also improved as the sales proportion of the Galaxy S8+ accounted for over 50 percent of the total Galaxy S8 series. Despite the strong sales performance of premium smartphones, Samsung’s total phone shipments remained at a similar level QoQ, due to decreased sales of mid- to low-end products.

Samsung Semiconductor maintains strong performance in Q2 : Samsung Korea has published financial results for Q2 2017. The semiconductor business posted KRW 8.03 trillion in operating profits on consolidated revenue of KRW 17.58 trillion for the quarter. The Memory Business achieved solid earnings growth in the quarter thanks to continued strong demand for high-density server DRAM and SDD, despite weaker seasonal demand for mobile. Limited supply conditions also remained in the industry, which allowed for favorable supply-demand conditions and prices. For NAND, earnings were driven by expanded sales of value-added products, such as mobile products over 64GB, datacenter NVMe SSD and enterprise SSD. For DRAM, demand for differentiated products, such as high-density server products and HBM, contributed to earnings growth.

Samsung Display Panel financial results for Q2 2017 : The Display Panel segment posted KRW 7.71 trillion in consolidated revenue and KRW 1.71 trillion in operating profit for the quarter driven by increased sales of premium OLED displays and high-end, large-size LCD panels. For the OLED business, earnings improved QoQ on the back of increased shipments of premium flexible displays for flagship smartphones while the LCD business saw profitability enhanced QoQ due mainly to increased sales of high-end, large-size UHD panels amid stable ASP conditions. Looking ahead to the second half for the OLED business, although the company forecasts increased sales of premium flexible displays, the initial costs of the new OLED production line during the third quarter is expected to weigh on profit.

The Consumer Electronics Division, including the Visual Display and Digital Appliances businesses, posted KRW 10.92 trillion in consolidated revenue and KRW 0.32 trillion in operating profit for the second quarter. In the second quarter, overall TV market demand declined YoY, owing to heightened demand in 2016 due to major global sporting events, as well as a slowdown in the Chinese market. Although the company maintained its leading position in the premium market by increasing sales of UHD and ultra large-size TVs, profit declined YoY due to increased panel prices.

Samsung Electronics named best brand in Asia : Samsung Electronics has been named the best brand in Asia for the sixth year in a row, according to results from Asia’s Top 1000 Brands annual online survey conducted by Campaign Asia-Pacific in collaboration with Nielsen. The ranking - which aggregates views across 17 major product categories including automotive, retail, food and beverage, and consumer electronics - is based on consumer insights, and offers a clear measure of the most highly regarded and reputable brand names today. The study explores consumer attitudes in 13 markets across Asia. This year, Samsung’s launch of premium products in its core businesses - smartphones, smart TV, and kitchen en home appliances - were deemed to strengthen the company’s brand power and corporate brand value.

Samsung Semiconductor plant started mass production : Samsung Electronics, a manufacturer of advanced semiconductor components, recently announced that its new semiconductor fabrication line in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, has begun mass production and shipping its first product to customers around the world. The new facility will focus on the production of Samsung’s fourth-generation V-NAND (64 layers), adding to the company’s leading capacity for premium memory products. With two years of construction since it broke ground in May, 2015, the new semiconductor plant at the Pyeongtaek campus is currently the largest single Fab in the industry. The Pyeongtaek campus represents a new chapter in Samsung’s semiconductor operations.

Samsung to build new Home Appliance plant in the US

Samsung home appliance manufacturing plant : Samsung Korea reached an agreement with the State of South Carolina to open a home appliance manufacturing plant in Newberry County. The $380M manufacturing facility will produce some of Samsung’s most popular home appliance products. The Samsung Home appliance plant will generate almost 1000 local jobs by 2020. Samsung Electronics began contemplating an expansion of its US production base nearly three years ago and initiated discussions with South Carolina in the fall of 2016. The company ultimately selected the Newberry County site for its workforce, robust supply chain and transportation infrastructure and commitment to public-private partnerships.

Korean headquarters reports Q1 2017 financial outlook : Samsung Electronics Korean headquarters has published financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2017. Samsung’s revenue for Q1 2017 was KRW 50.55 trillion, an total increase of KRW 0.77 trillion YoY, while operating profit for Q1 2017 was KRW 9.90 trillion, an increase of KRW 3.22 trillion YoY. In Q1 2017, global sales for the memory and display businesses increased, owing to high ASPs and strong sales of premium products. However, revenue from the mobile business decreased due to a decline in flagship product sales (also read: Chinese smartphone 2017 market report'). Profits were driven by the components businesses, namely the semiconductor division and the display panel segment.

The consumer division, including the Visual Display and Digital Appliances businesses, posted KRW 10.34 trillion in consolidated revenue and KRW 0.38 trillion in operating profit for Q1 2017. In the first quarter of 2017, the TV market is projected to decline QoQ due to weak seasonality as well as decreased demand in the European and Latin American markets. The IM Division - comprising the Mobile Communications and Networks Businesses - posted KRW 23.50 trillion in consolidated revenue and KRW 2.07 trillion in operating profit in Q1 2017. While smartphone and tablet market demand saw a slight decrease quarter to quarter due to seasonal effects, cellular phone shipments for the mobile division slightly increased compared to Q4 2016. This increase was largely due to the newly released Galaxy A 2017 devices and solid sales in the mid- to low-end segment in emerging markets. Samsung 10-nanometer process technology announcement : Samsung Electronics, a global leader in advanced semiconductor components and technology, officially announced that its second generation 10-nanometer (nm) FinFET process technology, 10LPP (Low Power Plus), has been qualified and is ready for mass production. With further enhancement in 3D FinFET structure, 10LPP allows up to 10-percent higher performance or 15-percent lower power consumption compared to the first generation 10LPE (Low-Power Early) process with the same area scaling. Samsung semiconductor was the first in the industry to begin mass production of system-on-chips (SoCs) products on 10LPE last October. The latest premium Galaxy S8 Android smartphones are powered by some of these semiconductor components.

During the GS8 product launch, New York City Time Square was dominated by Samsung ads placing a blue glow over the city's heart.
