Smartphone business highlights and global device shipments : IDC reports: Global smartphone volumes decline slightly in the second quarter of 2017. According to preliminary research results from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Report, smartphone OEMs shipped a total of 341.6 million smartphones worldwide in the second quarter of 2017. Coming off a higher than expected first quarter, device shipments declined 1.3% from the same quarter a year ago and were down 0.8% from the first quarter this year. Samsung and Apple both held shares relatively constant from the second quarter a year ago, while the other three vendors rounding out the top 5 - Huawei, OPPO, and Xiaomi - all gain market share.

The downward spiral of the worldwide tablet market continued during the second quarter of 2017, according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker. The total tablet market includes slate tablets plus detachable tablets. Despite product launches like the new lower priced iPad and tablets from other top-tier vendors, shipments for tablets declined 3.4% year over year in 2Q17, reaching 37.9 million. Once touted as the savior of the market, detachable tablets also declined in the second quarter as consumers waited in anticipation of product refreshes from high-profile manufacturers like Apple and Microsoft.

IDC forecast report for wearables : Smart Wearables market to nearly double by 2021, according to IDC. As the wearables market transforms, total shipment volumes are expected to maintain their forward momentum. According to the latest data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Wearable Device Tracker, manufacturers will ship a total of 125.5 million wearable products this year, marking a 20.4% increase from the 104.3 million units shipped in 2016. From there, the wearables market will nearly double before reaching a total of 240.1 million units shipped in 2021, resulting in a five-year CAGR of 18.2%. New business opportunities exist for developers and channel partners to provide the apps, services, and distribution that will support the growing abundance of wearables.

IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report 2017 : According to a new market forecast from the International Data Corporation (IDC), worldwide smartphone shipments are expected to rebound slightly in 2017 with expected growth of 3.0% over the previous year. IDC market reports and forecasts provide accurate and timely market size, vendor share, and forecasts for hundreds of technology markets from more than 100 countries around the world. In 2016, year-over-year growth was 2.5%, marking the lowest growth the industry has ever experienced. With several smart devices entering the market this year, IDC anticipates shipment volumes will grow to 1.52 billion in 2017. IDC expects this momentum to carry into 2018, when mobile phone shipments are forecast to grow 4.5% year over year, fueled by better economic conditions and a full year of new iPhone shipments.
