Digital Imaging Trends at Photokina

Dennis Hissink : 2008-10-10 10:30:00
Photokina 2008 epilogue : The huge imaging event of this year has come to an end. After an entire Photokina week, we look back on an interesting show. Not so much because of all the 'news', since most of the introductions take place before the Photokina show kicked off, but more so because of the feeling that the event gave us. We have a hunch that some interesting developments will take place in the period that is about to arrive, in which a shifting of categorized photographers and the segment they belong to is not entirely impossible. To us, Panasonic’s convincing introduction of its new Micro FourThirds camera to the public was the highlight of the Photokina 2008. And we got our second surprise when Leica suddenly conjured a Leica S2 37 megapixels DSLR system out of a hat.

Sony SLR cameras at Photokina

Ilse Jurriën : 2008-10-03 10:30:00
Sony digital SLR cameras at Photokina 2008 : If we speak of a manufacturer that is growing fast and conquering a large market share with a lot of marketing force, it has to be Sony playing the main role. In 2006 Sony launched its first DSLR under the own brand name; the Sony Alpha 100. One year later, the Sony Alpha 700 arrived, a camera for the middle segment. 2008 was a great break-through with no less than three new DSLR models, notably the A200, A300 and A350. During the PMA, at the beginning of 2008, Sony stirred up the fire by unveiling some information about the CMOS image sensor that was going to be used. The message was clear; with 24.6 Megapixels on a full frame sensor, 2008 should also be the year for Sony to launch a DSLR in the high end segment. And thus, the Sony DSLR-A900 was born.

Tamron lenses at Photokina

Ilse Jurriën : 2008-10-03 10:20:00
Tamron lens assortment at Photokina 2008 : Tamron, presented in quite a large booth, showcased several new lenses. Tamron will undoubtedly stay close to the continuously growing DSLR market, and will be able to reap the fruits of their efforts. It won't be the lens assortment that is to blame, because we spotted many interesting consumer lenses among the heap. However, Tamron is not the only player in the field; competing brands such as Sigma are still very much in the game and it is a matter of continuous innovation and making sure to act according to the demand of an unpredictable DSLR market. Whether Tamron will also produce lenses for the new Micro FourThirds segment is yet to be revealed. Tamron have not yet answered the question. This might just be a question of supply and demand, and if there is sufficient market share, the Micro Four Thirds system will also become an interesting segment for Tamron.

HP printers at Photokina

Ilse Jurriën : 2008-10-03 10:10:00
HP photo printers at Photokina 2008 : HP doesn't seem to have anything left to offer when it comes to cameras. The company seems to have bid these farewell and instead focuses on image editing for cameras and printing solutions in any which way you can imagine. HP offers many printer solutions, from compact trendy photo printers portable in an equally trendy bag, to large format printers that print ultra big poster sized prints. HP no longer manufacturing digital cameras is a loss for the digital imaging industry, since the company used to develop and manufacture interesting models. Sadly, HP lacked the strategy to actually claim a market share. Perhaps their choice is not a permanent one, since the imaging industry is subject to ongoing changes.

Leica digital system camera at Photokina

Ilse Jurriën : 2008-10-03 10:00:00
Leica system camera at Photokina 2008 : Besides Panasonic’s surprising news for the visitors of the Photokina show, Leica also made itself heard. Leica is a company with an excellent reputation, although you would not actually expect surprises of them. However, at the Photokina 2008, Leica presented the company as a brand with actual world fame. Who would expect Leica to present an entirely new digital camera system in addition to a twosome compact cameras (C-Lux 3 and D-Lux 4) and a somewhat dull Leica M8.2? A genuine surprise, to say the very least, and an interesting new development for the professional photography market. The Leica S2 is a much larger format system camera than the usual Leica assortment, and the camera features a gigantic sensor sized 30 x 45mm.

Kodak picture frames at Photokina

Ilse Jurriën : 2008-10-03 09:50:00
Kodak digital cameras at Photokina 2008 : If you are well acquainted with the imaging world, you likely remember the enormously huge hall Kodak used to claim for its company to showcase and introduce the Kodak assortment. This is hard to imagine after visiting the Photokina 2008. The old Kodak is no longer today's Kodak. That is to say, Kodak doesn't seem to be that prominently present in the field of consumer electronics, and the Kodak booth seems to confirm this. There is a line-up of the digital compact cameras on the counter; waiting for visitors, however, the digital photo frames seems to have taken over. These frames stem from a long generation of digital photo frames of which these recent frames benefit since they are packed with all sorts of technical novelties.

Hasselblad medium format cameras at Photokina

Ilse Jurriën : 2008-10-03 09:40:00
Hasselblad medium format photography : Two years ago, during the Photokina 2006, the Hasselblad H3D was introduced. A revolutionary new system which was Hasselblad's first step in the direction of affordable digital medium format photography. And although the prices were not yet that appealing two years ago for the majority of the professional photographers, it becomes clear during the Photokina 2008 that the introduction of two years ago did work out well. Prices can drop now that the first development costs seem to have broken even, and Hasselblad managed to introduce a couple of new cameras; the Hasselblad H3DII-39 and the H3DII50. The H3DII-50 is the first camera in the market equipped with Kodak's 50 megapixel sensor.

Olympus digital cameras at Photokina

Ilse Jurriën : 2008-10-03 09:30:00
Olympus Micro FourThirds camera concept at Photokina : Most surprising was the presentation of a twosome so-called Micro FourThirds system concept models at the Photokina 2008. However, it does not come across as a well thought-out strategy; on the contrary, it seems that Olympus wants to tickle us with something that in the end might not be available. At least, that is what it looks like to an outsider. However; when talking to various R&D employees of Olympus, the official statement is that Olympus doesn't find the time is right to present a camera fully based on the Micro FourThirds system. In order to develop a true compact Micro Four Thirds System camera with the highest possible image quality, Olympus takes its time, unlike Panasonic; since this company already presented a working camera with the aforementioned system.

Flash photography demo for Nikon photographers

Ilse Jurriën : 2008-10-02 16:20:00
Nikon photography at Nikonians booth : Our good friends of Nikonians were also present at the Photokina show 2008. If you happened to miss the booth, the Nikonians undoubtedly attracted your attention by pushing a leaflet into your hands in one of the huge halls. Nikonians is the largest and most active group of Nikon lovers and focuses on the amateur, semipro and professional photographer. The booth of the Nikonians attracted a lot of attention. Through Apple computers, a lot of Nikon equipment and demonstrations by photographers, Pascal Baetens and Gary Fong, the audience was given a good impression of how certain accessories work and which effect they can have. Gary Fong showed his Lightspere system II, an excellent accessory for flash photography.

Canon EOS and PowerShot cameras at Photokina

Ilse Jurriën : 2008-10-02 15:00:00
Canon EOS SLR cameras at Photokina 2008 : Canon did its utmost for the Photokina 2008 and entertained lavishly. It is clear, and I cannot but say, that the current assortment impresses and is quite extensive. From the entry-level PowerShot compact camera up to the newest full frame EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR, everything could be found in the Canon booth. Unlike many other competing brands, Canon was able to attract many visitors with their compact camera line. And for a reason. Canon's new series of compact cameras is different, innovating and a true sign of Canon's power and daring to take the compact camera market seriously, offering sufficient possibilities for innovations.

Casio Exilim cameras at Photokina 2008

Ilse Jurriën : 2008-10-01 22:40:00
Casio Exilim digital cameras at Photokina 2008 : The Casio booth was a bit on the large side for the disappointing amount of visitors that arrived. The current EXILIM compact camera line does not stand out too much, apart from two exceptions. Two cameras are able to attract the attention; the Casio EXILIM Pro F1 and the recently introduced Casio EXILIM FH20. Both models offer a unique feature that makes them stand out from the crowd; and that feature is speed. The pair of them are true racing monsters and therefore all options are present to capture fast action moments right there and then at the Casio booth. Visitors of the Casio booth were invited to try and surpass the record distance (making the golf ball travel a distance as long as possible through an electronic golf club.)

Pentax SLR cameras at Photokina

Ilse Jurriën : 2008-10-01 22:30:00
Pentax digital SLR cameras at Photokina 2008 : Pentax knows how to attract the attention with the introduction of a number of products like D-SLR's, flash and lenses. The focus seems to have diverted from the compact camera assortment to other products. Certainly when we look at the attention that goes to the D-SLR assortment and the Photokina introductions. The Pentax K20 may be the current flagship of Pentax; with the introduction of the Pentax K-m/Pentax K2000 Pentax once again tries to get a grip on the DSLR market for beginning photographers. The size is definitely not to blame. The Pentax K-m/Pentax K2000 is very compact and can easily compete with other models, and stands a good chance for the title: 'compact DSLR of the year'. Even a pimped version of the Pentax K-m / K2000 was showcased and could be admired.

Fujifilm Finepix cameras at Photokina 2008

Ilse Jurriën : 2008-10-01 20:30:00
Fujifilm Finepix digital cameras at Photokina 2008 : If anything became clear at the Photokina 2008, it was the fact that the compact camera desperately needs an innovative boost. There was hardly any news on the field of compact cameras at this world event, it were the advanced digital cameras, D-SLR cameras that surprised us and, of course, the Micro FourThirds System. Even Fujifilm didn’t have a lot to offer, whereas in the past they have always introduced some interesting compact cameras during events like the Photokina, except for a few a FinePix camera models that were introduced the beginning of August. The assortment looks too familiar; there is more of the same stuff.

Panasonic Lumix cameras at Photokina 2008

Dennis Hissink : 2008-10-01 00:10:00
Panasonic DMC-G1 camera at Photokina 2008 : In our opinion, the most elevating news of the Photokina 2008 came from Panasonic. The recently announced Micro FourThirds System, by Panasonic and Olympus, was followed by a massive presentation of the new Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G1 at the Photokina show. The LUMIX G1 caught your eye everywhere you looked in the ambitious Panasonic booth. And in exchange for your driver’s license, you were able to receive a working sample of the Panasonic G1 to get acquainted with the world's first Micro FourThirds System camera on the show floor. A spectacular show around the G1 put even more emphasis on Panasonic's new flagship that played its leading role with verve.

Nikon SLR cameras popular at Photokina

Dennis Hissink : 2008-09-30 00:02:00
Nikon digital system cameras popular at Photokina 2008 : The famous Nikon yellow and black colors dominated a huge part of the gigantic halls of the Photokina show. The booth accurately represented Nikon's presentation in the world in 2008. The huge booth was crowded with people and could have done with some more floor space to be able to accommodate all the visitors. Nikon's DSLR models passed from hand to hand among the eager crowd. The new Nikon D90 was in the limelight, although the successful D3, D300 and the recently introduced D700 also seemed extremely wanted and popular.

Samsung cameras at Photokina 2008

Dennis Hissink : 2008-09-30 00:01:00
Samsung HZ1 digital camera at Photokina 2008 : The 'sleeping giant' is Samsung's name in the photo industry. And sleeping doesn't seem too far off we discovered, after visiting the Samsung booth at Photokina 2008. As for floor space, Samsung had sufficient room to show many of its new products, and it is rather striking that Samsung has nothing, or almost nothing, to declare as for cameras. All of the products but one prototype, the Samsung HZ1, were introduced at the CES and PMA (January 2008). Samsung seems to omit profiling the company as an innovative and serious camera manufacturer at the world's largest and most important imaging event, apart from a few camera models introduced in July.

Sigma digital cameras at Photokina 2008

Dennis Hissink : 2008-09-29 17:00:00
Sigma SLR camera at Photokina 2008 : Sigma was also present at the Photokina 2008. In addition to the announcement of a series of new lenses, among which the 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG HSM with a considerably smaller build than that of Nikon's own bright 24-70mm lens, Sigma also announced the development of the second generation DSLR and compact camera models. The Sigma SD15 and Sigma DP2 are both based on Foveon's 4.7x3 megapixel sensor; however, they will be equipped with a new processor called True II. This processor has to ensure an improved processing speed (for example for continuous shooting) and should increase the overall image quality. Sigma showcased both products to the public behind glass.

Sony World Photography Awards 2008

Dennis Hissink : 2008-04-30 00:00:00
Sony World Photography Awards 2008 : Last week I stayed in Cannes for a few days. Sony invited me to witness the announcement of the winner of the World Photography Awards sponsored by Sony. Currently Sony put a lot of effort in conquering a digital SLR market share. Continuing the success of the Cybershot series compact cameras that made Sony famous worldwide, Sony took their first step into the DSLR market in May 2006 with the introduction of the Sony Alpha 100. One year later, in September, the Alpha 700 was born, a DSLR camera for the advanced or semi-pro photographer. In the mean time word had spread that Sony were developing a DSLR for the Pro. At the time of the CES 2008 the actual launch of the Sony DLSR-A200 took place.
