Nikon 90th anniversary : This summer Nikon UK will be joining in with the celebrations around the world to mark Nikon’s 90th anniversary. Founded on July 25th, 1917, Nikon has become one of the world’s leading camera, imaging and optical manufacturers. “Nikon has maintained an unwavering commitment to the study of light with the corporate philosophy, ‘Trustworthiness and Creativity’,” said Michio Kariya, President of Nikon Corporation. “As the awards won at the recent Technical Image Press Association show, the Nikon name continues to represent photographic excellence for European photographic professionals and consumers alike.” Nikon is also introducing a special 90th Anniversary logo to mark the occasion.

ShootLive sports photo service : Images of David Beckham’s planned debut for Los Angeles Galaxy against Chelsea on Saturday are to be used by United Kingdom-based PA Photos to trial a new release of ShootLive, a new photo service that will herald a new era in how sports photography reaches websites, mobile phones and other media outlets. The match is to be covered by PA Photos, the photographic agency of the PA Group, the United Kingdom’s national agency, which has a world reputation for covering leading football events. ShootLive is a digital photography process that allows PA photographers to get their action pictures to a customer’s new media offering within minutes.

Photo Imaging Council statement : Photo Imaging Council members are actively assessing the implications of the proposal to classify certain types of digital camera as camcorders. The reclassification will mean they will now attract customs duty of 4.9%. The European Commission's Nomenclature Committee meeting in Brussels last Friday recommended the proposal in an Explanatory Note directing that a camera using the maximum storage capacity, capable of recording at least 30 minutes of a single sequential video recording, with a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels or higher at 23 frames per second or higher, will be classified as a video camera recorder under code 8525 80 91 - and therefore attract duty.

Job training program for Bayview youth : Lennar is helping youth and young adults in Bayview-Hunters Point learn cutting-edge skills in the rapidly changing field of digital media. The Bayview-Hunters Point Center for Arts and Technology has been training youth and young adults through its Digital Design and Media Arts Career Training Pilot Program, funded through a $150,000 donation from Lennar. During the first year of the program, BayCat recruited and trained 35 young adults. “We want to thank Lennar for their tremendous generosity,” said BayCat President and CEO Villy Wang. “Through the company’s donation, we have been able to reach youth who otherwise would not have the chance to learn these 21st century job skills."

SATA CompactFlash card development : The CompactFlash Association (CFA) announces the formation of a working group to develop a specification for a CompactFlash card with a SATA (Serial ATA) interface. CFA members interested in the SATA interface should apply for inclusion in the CFA’s SATA working group. Mr. Shigeto Kanda of Canon and the CFA chairman of the board said “The development of a CompactFlash card with a SATA interface will maintain the dominance of CompactFlash in the nonconsumer (embedded systems, single board computers, data recorder, etc.) markets as well as promote its use in other applications. Having the SATA interface will be a significant step for CompactFlash.”
