Philips CD anniversary : Exactly 25 years ago tomorrow, on August 17, 1982, Royal Philips Electronics manufactured the world’s first compact disc at a Philips factory in Langenhagen, Germany. The invention of the CD ushered in a technological revolution in the music industry as CDs - with their superior sound quality and scratch free durability - marked the beginning of the shift from analog to digital music technology. The CD became a catalyst for further innovation in digital entertainment, helping pave the way for the launch of DVD and the current introduction of Blu-ray optical media. The Philips factory in Germany, where the world’s first CD was pressed, belonged to Polygram - the recording company owned by Philips at the time.

Formal balloting of this work item is being submitted to the JPEG national delegations for approval. Sharp lawsuit against Samsung : Sharp Corporation filed a lawsuit on August 6, 2007 alleging infringements of five of its patents on LCD-related technology by Samsung Electronics and its US subsidiaries Samsung Electronics America, Inc. (SEA) and Samsung Telecommunications America (STA). The suit was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. Sharp has been a leading company in the development of the liquid crystal industry. Sharp began research and development in liquid crystal technology in 1970 and produced the world's first application of LCDs in calculators in 1973. Since then, Sharp has made continuous and considerable efforts in research and development of liquid crystal technology.

HP ink patent infringement suit against Pelikan : HP announced that Pelikan Hardcopy Deutschland GmbH and the Swiss Pelikan Hardcopy (International) AG have admitted claims asserted by HP in an action for patent infringement filed with the Düsseldorf Regional Court in Germany. Based on this admission, the court issued a judgment ordering Pelikan to stop importing and distributing the infringing cartridges and to pay damages to HP. Pelikan also was ordered to recall all infringing products that might still be in the distribution channel. In May, HP alleged that Pelikan infringed multiple HP patents related to the print cartridges and the ink formulation found in Pelikan products. Pelikan has admitted HP’s claims.

Yamashita’s exhibit is a melting pot of modern and ancient worlds captured in vibrant color images from China, Venice, Iran, Iraq, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Largest photograph and camera : The Great Picture -the world’s largest photograph will have its premier showing September 6 to 29, 2007 at Art Center College of Design, South Campus Wind Tunnel, Pasadena, California. In official certificates issued July, 2007 in London, Guinness states: “The largest camera was created from an airplane hanger measuring 13.71 x 48.76 x 24.38 m. The camera produced a photograph on canvas measuring 9.62 x 33.83 m. The attempt was organized by The Legacy Project at the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, California.” The six artists view The Great Picture as an exclamation point at the end of the film-based era, a marker at the crossing where photography moves away from film and into pixels.

OSRAM puts focus on OLED business ; OSRAM will be exiting the production of passive matrix displays based on organic LEDs (OLEDs) at the end of the year. The company will be concentrating its OLED activities on developing market-ready OLED lighting solutions. As a result, the display manufacturing line in Penang, Malaysia, will cease production at the end of the year. The 270 employees there will be transferred to other activities within OSRAM Opto Semiconductors including the new LED chip production facility in Penang. Jobs are being sought in other parts of the company for the OLED product team in the USA. No employees in Germany are affected. OSRAM Opto Semiconductors will honor the existing obligations toward its customers.
