Samsung 300mm NAND flash memory wafer plant : Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., announced the opening of the largest 300mm NAND flash memory wafer plant in Austin, Texas on Thursday, in ceremonies that included Texas Governor Rick Perry and Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman & CEO Jong-Yong Yun. The 1.6 million square foot building - as large as nine football fields and one of the largest buildings in Austin - is one of the largest single semiconductor facilities in the United States. The first product of the new plant will be 16Gb NAND flash chips using 50-nanometer level process technology. The $3.5 billion facility will initiate operation in the second half of 2007 and ramp up to produce 60,000 wafers per month by 2008.

Samsung LCD TVs at SID 2007 : Samsung Electronics is exhibiting two of its leading display products, as well as a few highly promising concept prototypes at the 45th annual Society for Display (SID) 2007 exhibition being held here May 22-24. Samsung is exhibiting the 40” LCD TV with LED backlight that has been awarded this year’s SID Gold Award for Display of the Year. The 40-inch LED-backlit display delivers a contrast ratio of 10,000:1, which is five times higher than that of LCD panels with a CCFL backlight. Color saturation is also 105% of the NTSC standard. These improvements are helping to put LCD TVs with an LED backlight into the market mainstream, and the award recognizes this fact.

Samsung mobile phone memory card : Samsung Electronics announced that it has developed an 8Gigabyte (GB) microSD (Secure Digital) memory card, a size optimal for today’s multimedia mobile phones. Featuring the highest capacity today for a microSD card, the new fingernail-sized card is capable of storing 2,000 MP3 music files, 4,000 digital photos, or approximately five DVD-quality movies. SD cards, to date, have been largely used for data storage in digital still cameras and increasingly in televisions. MicroSD cards, which are a quarter the size of an SD card, are backward compatible with SD cards using an extender, to allow multimedia files downloaded by mobile phones to be easily displayed on other media.

Samsung 16Gb NAND Flash Memory : Samsung Electronics, a leader in advanced semiconductor technology, announced today that it has become the first to begin mass producing 16 gigabit (Gb) NAND flash, the highest capacity memory chip now available. The company said it will fabricate the devices in 51 nanometers (nm), the finest process technology to be used in memory mass production to date. “In rolling out the densest NAND flash in the world, we are throwing open the gates to a much wider playing field for flash-driven consumer electronics,” said Jim Elliott, director, flash marketing, Samsung Semiconductor. With support technology in place, demand for 16Gb NAND flash memory is expected to grow rapidly.

Samsung and Nokia mobile TV interoperability : Samsung and Nokia announced they will work to achieve interoperability among their DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcast - Handheld) enabled mobile devices and the open standards based Nokia network services system. The handset manufacturers will work together to support solutions based on the open OMA BCAST standard available for operator partners interested in deploying multi-vendor mobile TV services and trials in 2007 and onward. Capacity of the single-disk platform ranges between 60 and 160GB, while a dual-disk model is under development that will provide up to 250GB of storage space. Samsung has already shipped test samples of the SpinPoint M5 Series to OEM vendors and plans to begin mass production in mid-April. The SpinPoint M5 series utilizes perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology, and the disk drive design has been optimized to allow ultra-precision adjustment of the head parking ramp position for high-density recording.

Samsung SpinPoint silent hard drive : Samsung Electronics announced its new SpinPoint S166 Series of ultra silent and high-speed hard disk drives. The 3.5” SpinPoint S166 hard drives are currently shipping in 80GB and 160GB capacities and will be available worldwide in April. The new SpinPoint S Series of hard drives offer upgraded versions of Samsung’s proprietary SilentSeek and NoiseGuard technologies to accelerate operational speed while reducing noise. Benchmarking tests on sound power have shown that competing hard drives (80GB and 160GB models) generate on average 2.8 bel (1 bel = 10 decibels) in idle mode and 3.2 bel in seek mode, while Samsung’s S166 series generate just 2.4 bel and 2.75 bel respectively.

Screen brightness is automatically adjusted to enhance readability under any lighting condition. Designed for use in high-end mobile phones, PDAs and portable media players, the new panel also has a temperature compensation sensor embedded in its LCD driver IC that maintains a steady operational mode regardless of any temperature change in the surrounding environment.

The new CIS chip provides a high signal to noise ratio (SNR), a key measure of overall image quality. Samsung achieved the high-resolution level by implementing advanced light sensing features and minimized noise levels. Notably, an extended photo diode technology was implemented to achieve higher light sensitivity and saturation levels, resulting in an enhanced fill factor. Furthermore, it provides the same image quality as the charge-coupled device (CCD) image sensors currently used in most digital cameras and camcorders.

By offering much higher performance and significantly lower overall cost than conventional memory solutions, we have tapped into very strong and growing customer demand,” said John R. The popular device is the first fusion memory chip, a device that fuses a single-level-cell NAND core with SRAM and logic elements to emulate a NOR Flash interface.
