JPEG XR format from Microsoft

JPEG XR format from Microsoft : Microsoft welcomed the decision, announced by JPEG, to introduce a work item for Microsoft’s HD Photo file format. Formal balloting of this work item is being submitted to the JPEG national delegations for approval. Standardization of HD Photo, tentatively titled, “JPEG XR,” will ensure that camera, printer, display and software companies will be able to develop products with the confidence of a consistent scheme that ensures interoperability across their properties. The HD Photo image coding technology, incubated in Microsoft Research and developed by Microsoft’s Core Media Processing Team, offers a host of new features and benefits focusing on the current and emerging needs of digital photography.

Microsoft Digital Photography Research : Microsoft researchers showcase graphics and interactive innovations at SIGGRAPH 2007 that will make it easier for everyday users to edit digital photos and produce professional-quality reconstructed photographic images. Sometimes, the old adage that “two negatives yield a positive” goes beyond mathematics and enters another realm. This week, researchers from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Microsoft Research will present how two negatives can indeed equal a positive for digital photographers at SIGGRAPH 2007, the Association for Computing Machinery’s 34th annual international conference on computer graphics and interactive techniques.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will unveil Microsoft Surface, the first in a new category of surface computing products from Microsoft that breaks down traditional barriers between people and technology. Surface turns an ordinary tabletop into a vibrant, dynamic surface that provides effortless interaction with all forms of digital content through natural gestures, touch and physical objects. Beginning at the end of this year, consumers will be able to interact with Surface in hotels, retail establishments, restaurants and public entertainment venues.

Microsoft phone software design specifications : Monday at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) 2007, Microsoft Corp. and nine industry-leading companies - ASUSTek Computer Inc., GN, LG-Nortel Co. Ltd., NEC Corp., Plantronics Inc., Polycom Inc., Samsung, Tatung Co. and ViTELiX - will introduce a new generation of devices that connect the workplace phone to e-mail, instant messaging, real-time presence information, conferencing, voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and mobile communications. Beginning tomorrow, a new wave of phones and devices will become available for use in the public beta program of Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 and Microsoft Office Communicator 2007.

With this update to Xbox 360, friends and families can easily connect and chat directly from their television using Windows Live Messenger, a network of more than 20 billion relationships and more than 260 million active accounts. Beginning the week of May 7, 2007, the Xbox 360 Spring Update will provide Microsoft Xbox 360 owners worldwide with access to Windows Live Messenger features, broadening the communication options on the Xbox LIVE social network. The Update is free and is accessible to every Xbox 360 owner.

Microsoft unveils new mobile web browser : At the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference (eTech), Microsoft unveiled a new mobile technology, called Deepfish, designed to offer mobile users quick and convenient Web browsing that more closely resembles the experience of browsing the Web on desktop computers. Microsoft is making a limited technology preview available to the public on a first-come basis. To learn more Deepfish technology and how it will improve Web browsing for mobile users, PressPass spoke with Dr. Gary William Flake, a Microsoft Technical Fellow and the founder and director of Microsoft Live Labs.
