Samsung mobile phone memory card : Samsung Electronics announced that it has developed an 8Gigabyte (GB) microSD (Secure Digital) memory card, a size optimal for today’s multimedia mobile phones. Featuring the highest capacity today for a microSD card, the new fingernail-sized card is capable of storing 2,000 MP3 music files, 4,000 digital photos, or approximately five DVD-quality movies. SD cards, to date, have been largely used for data storage in digital still cameras and increasingly in televisions. MicroSD cards, which are a quarter the size of an SD card, are backward compatible with SD cards using an extender, to allow multimedia files downloaded by mobile phones to be easily displayed on other media.

Nuclear test flash memory at e-Fotografija : Our good friend and DIWA member Matjaz Intihar from e-Fotografija has reviewed an ATP 4GB SDHC Class 6 flash memory card in Nuclear Power Plant Krško labs. ATP Class 6 4GB ProMax SD High Capacity (SDHC) is the latest addition to ATP ProMax family. Built upon SD Association 2.00 specification which enables capacities of 4GB up to 32GB, it maintains a minimum sustained data transfer speed rating of 6MB/sec. SDHC is the new generation SD card built upon the new SDA 2.00 specification, which allows SD cards to reach capacities of 4GB up to 32GB. The new specification is released in response to growing demand for high quality photo images and high resolution video recording capabilities.

The MediaServer Flash Streamer is a 100-percent flash memory-based solution that completely decouples on-demand streaming from disk-based content storage, empowering television operators to push their streaming resources to the network edge and deploy centralized content libraries. “With flash technology, operators can bring much more content to the network edge to more subscribers without having to bring disk storage with it, which means more content and higher quality of service at a much lower total cost of ownership,” said Bang Chang, director of server products, SeaChange.

Samsung 16Gb NAND Flash Memory : Samsung Electronics, a leader in advanced semiconductor technology, announced today that it has become the first to begin mass producing 16 gigabit (Gb) NAND flash, the highest capacity memory chip now available. The company said it will fabricate the devices in 51 nanometers (nm), the finest process technology to be used in memory mass production to date. “In rolling out the densest NAND flash in the world, we are throwing open the gates to a much wider playing field for flash-driven consumer electronics,” said Jim Elliott, director, flash marketing, Samsung Semiconductor. With support technology in place, demand for 16Gb NAND flash memory is expected to grow rapidly.
