130 Million Digital Cameras by 2010 : According to the latest forecast from Lyra Research, the digital imaging authority, worldwide digital camera shipments rose 21% in 2006 to approximately 98 million units. This sizeable growth spurt occurred despite household penetration of greater than 50% in Japan, the United States, and leading nations in Western Europe, and in spite of multimegapixel camera phones becoming commonplace in Asia and Europe. Lyra’s forecast now projects worldwide digital camera shipments to exceed 130 million camera units in 2010 for a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 10 percent. Lyra’s complete digital camera forecast, available to subscribers of Lyra’s Consumer Imaging Intelligence service.

Full frame cameras with FireWire connection : Audio Video Supply, Inc. has introduced its FWD line of progressive scan cameras, the first to utilize FireWire-B (IEEE-1394.b) technology, resulting in transfer rates of 800 Mbps or twice that of FireWire-A or USB 2.0 cameras. The Machine Vision market is expected to use the new technology to leverage speed into increases production. Firewire-A and USB 2.0 is the current standard for many OEM applications involving robotic vision, semiconductor inspection and assembly, microscopy and electronic surveillance. The FireWire-B enables the transfer rate of 800 Mbps. In addition to increasing transfer rates, FireWire-B enables the cameras to achieve imaging results with less signal distortion.
