Sony Alpha photo contest : The Sony Alpha photo contest Unseen Britain Challenge has embarked on its campaign to capture never seen before images of Britain with renowned photographer and climber Mike Robertson. Commissioned by Sony, Mike will tour the country scaling new heights and legendary landmarks to create totally new and exciting photographic images using the new Sony Alpha 700 Digital SLR camera. Six structures across Britain have been selected by Mike, based on the challenge of the climb, the geographical location, the visual impact of their surroundings and the opportunity to capture a never seen before Britain. These are Spinnaker Tower, Blackpool Tower, Newport Transporter Bridge, Snowhill Plaza and a London site.

Olympus photo contest for photography students : Olympus announced its inaugural “Photographers of Tomorrow” photo contest, which is specifically designed for aspiring professional photographers or photojournalists, and will enrich the resumes and portfolios of the participating students. Starting January 14, 2008, photography students will submit their best work captured with the Olympus E-3 digital SLR (digital single lens reflex) camera in three categories: Speed, Travel and Environmental Issues. Student entries will be judged by a panel of award-winning photographers, comprised of Olympus Visionaries. The winning Olympus photo contest images will be announced in April 2008.

World Press Photo Contest 2008 : World Press Photo is launching an online service for professional photographers for uploading their entries of the 2008 World Press Photo Contest online. Photographers can register until 4 January to access the site. The deadline for uploading entries is 10 January 2008. The participants will no longer need to download the entry form, fill in their personal details and caption information on paper, and code their images and save them on a disc. The entire procedure can now be completed online, including editing the entries before submitting them. The images will be automatically coded and the file info metadata does not need to be copied separately.

Landscape photographer of the year 2007 : An exhibition of over 100 winning and commended entries in the first major ‘Landscape Photographer of the Year’ competition will be held at the National Theatre on London’s South Bank from 15th September. The exhibition is free and will be open from 9.30am to 10.30pm, Monday to Saturday, until 3rd November. With over 20,000 photographs submitted for the competition, selecting the images now on show was no simple task for the distinguished panel of judges. “The standard of entries was incredibly high and the variety of images was simply remarkable,” says Charlie Waite, world-renowned landscape photographer and the man behind this high-profile competition.

Editorial photography winners : Getty Images announced that Jonathan Lowenstein, Jonathan Torgovnik and Leo Maguire will each receive financial and editorial support enabling them to pursue new documentary photography projects. “Shadow Lives USA” is Jonathan Lowenstein’s winning photojournalism project, documenting six different issues facing those trying to enter the United States across the US-Mexico border. Lowenstein proposes that it is crucial to insert nuanced and sensitive depictions of undocumented workers’. His extensive travel and long-term commitment to document the plight of illegal immigrants, enable him to build lasting connections with the men and women who reside in the shadows of US society.

Photo journalism from photographers : The World Press Photo exhibition showcases the best of press photography from across the globe. Annually, Amsterdam based World Press Photo organises a competition to select the best examples of photo-journalism from photographers, agencies, newspapers and magazines. Winning entries are selected by an international panel of independent judges from divergent backgrounds who bring a breadth of experience to the judging process. The Scottish Parliament exhibition will comprise 178 images drawn from news coverage of world events in 2006. The winning images were selected from 78,083 submitted by 4,460 photographers from 124 countries. Prizes were awarded to 60 photographers over 10 themed categories.

Dunlop photo book to sponsor Motorsport safety fund : Dunlop Tyres are appealing for motoring enthusiasts to submit digital photography for inclusion in a coffee-table photobook encapsulating the thrill of the drive. The photography book will then be sold to raise money for the Motorsport Safety Fund which helps aid improvements in safety standards at motorsport events. James Bailey of Dunlop Tyres said: “We really want to produce a photobook that celebrates the best and most emotive elements of car driving. We know that many driving enthusiasts are also passionate about photography and we would like to give them the chance to see their work in print. The closing date for entries is 31st August 2007.
