Sony Alpha photo contest : The Sony Alpha photo contest Unseen Britain Challenge has embarked on its campaign to capture never seen before images of Britain with renowned photographer and climber Mike Robertson. Commissioned by Sony, Mike will tour the country scaling new heights and legendary landmarks to create totally new and exciting photographic images using the new Sony Alpha 700 Digital SLR camera. Six structures across Britain have been selected by Mike, based on the challenge of the climb, the geographical location, the visual impact of their surroundings and the opportunity to capture a never seen before Britain. These are Spinnaker Tower, Blackpool Tower, Newport Transporter Bridge, Snowhill Plaza and a London site.

Olympus photo contest for photography students : Olympus announced its inaugural “Photographers of Tomorrow” photo contest, which is specifically designed for aspiring professional photographers or photojournalists, and will enrich the resumes and portfolios of the participating students. Starting January 14, 2008, photography students will submit their best work captured with the Olympus E-3 digital SLR (digital single lens reflex) camera in three categories: Speed, Travel and Environmental Issues. Student entries will be judged by a panel of award-winning photographers, comprised of Olympus Visionaries. The winning Olympus photo contest images will be announced in April 2008.


World Press Photo Contest 2008

World Press Photo Contest 2008 : World Press Photo is launching an online service for professional photographers for uploading their entries of the 2008 World Press Photo Contest online. Photographers can register until 4 January to access the site. The deadline for uploading entries is 10 January 2008. The participants will no longer need to download the entry form, fill in their personal details and caption information on paper, and code their images and save them on a disc. The entire procedure can now be completed online, including editing the entries before submitting them. The images will be automatically coded and the file info metadata does not need to be copied separately.

Canon fans can enter the “So You Want to Be a Pop Star” sweepstakes by simply logging onto the PowerShot site and entering their name, e-mail address and phone number. Ten finalists will be chosen at random on November 19. Finalists will receive a new Canon PowerShot SD870 IS Digital Elph camera to record a sixty-second video for the Web site that showcases their talents, whether that means singing, dancing or any other skill they think qualifies them to be a pop star!

Garden Photographer of the Year : Calling all ‘budding’ garden photographers. Are you the next Garden Photographer of The Year? With thousands of pounds worth of cash and prizes up for grabs, this is a unique opportunity for entrants to have their photographs exhibited for the four summer months of 2008, alongside some of the world’s most talented photographers in the gardening and landscape world. Several hundred thousand visitors will see the top one hundred pictures at a purpose-built outdoor exhibition at The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London. Amateur and professional photographers are encouraged to enter single images or themed portfolios and there will be prizes to suit both types of entry.

Landscape photographer of the year 2007 : An exhibition of over 100 winning and commended entries in the first major ‘Landscape Photographer of the Year’ competition will be held at the National Theatre on London’s South Bank from 15th September. The exhibition is free and will be open from 9.30am to 10.30pm, Monday to Saturday, until 3rd November. With over 20,000 photographs submitted for the competition, selecting the images now on show was no simple task for the distinguished panel of judges. “The standard of entries was incredibly high and the variety of images was simply remarkable,” says Charlie Waite, world-renowned landscape photographer and the man behind this high-profile competition.
