Popular Science Award for Fujifilm FinePix camera : Fujifilm USA, Inc. is pleased to announce that Popular Science has selected the Fujifilm FinePix F50fd digital camera as the recipient of a 2007 Best of What’s New award in the Gadget category. The editors of Popular Science singled out the FinePix F50fd as “the first camera that can detect faces -to optimize focus, exposure and color-even if people are turned to the side or looking up or down.” Fujifilm’s proprietary Face Detection 2.0 debuted on the F50fd and includes a new Automatic Red-Eye Removal feature that automatically corrects red-eye directly after the shot is taken and then saves both the original and the corrected image file.

Library of Congress awarded Stock Artists Alliance : The US Library of Congress has awarded the Stock Artists Alliance one of eight partnerships for preserving digital media. The partnerships are part of the $2.15 million Preserving Creative America initiative of the Library’s National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program. These partnerships each address different aspects of preservation, to help insure the survival of digital media, whether images, movies or even video games. Being recognized along with the likes of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Sony, and BMI, SAA’s award comes as acknowledgment of SAA’s ongoing work to promote the importance of using and preserving photo metadata.

Texar Inventor of the Year Award : John Melanson, Academy Award-winning distinguished fellow with Cirrus Logic, is the recipient of the Texas Inventor of the Year Award, given annually by the State Bar of Texas, as chosen by the Bar’s Intellectual Property Law Section. Melanson received the award on June 22 during the State Bar’s Annual Meeting in San Antonio. Melanson, 54, has led a distinguished career that spans more than 30 years in the semiconductor and electronics industry and has been awarded more than 100 patents, primarily in audio and mixed signal technologies. In particular, Melanson pioneered the development of new signal processing technologies that were key to reducing power consumption in hearing aid applications.

International photography awards competition : Open Competition for all UK photographers to compete for international acclaim and a trip to New York to attend the prestigious IPA Lucie Awards. Premium international beer brand Pilsner Urquell is to further its commitment to supporting photography by launching The Deeper Perspective. The innovative category is open to all photographers, as part of the 2007 Pilsner Urquell International Photography Awards competition. Every photograph has its own unique story. As such, for the first time, Deeper Perspective will see photographic entries being judged not only on the merits of the photograph itself but also on the story that the photographers will be invited to supply with it.

Best computer magazine and website 2007 : At a ceremony held in Los Angeles last week, PC World was honored with six Maggie Awards by the Western Publications Association (WPA), including Best Computer/Consumer Magazine and Best Website/Consumer for PC World Online. Presented annually, the Maggie Awards recognize editorial, online, design, and promotional excellence. In August 2006, PC World Online underwent a top-to-bottom redesign, resulting in a dynamic new look with enhanced advertising opportunities, community offerings, and rearchitected back-end. Photographers awards gala held in London theater : The Association of Photographers announce that their annual Awards are being held this year in a gala event at Sadler's Wells Theater, London. Around one thousand guests are expected to attend this leading showcase. The Gala evening includes a reception at which the Awards Exhibition of 350 selected images will be launched together with the Awards Book, followed by an on-stage presentation of the coveted Gold, Silver and Bronze. The Awards fall into three main categories: AOP Photographers' Awards, open to members only; AOP Assistants' Awards, open to registered assistants only and AOP Document, the photojournalism category open to all photographers worldwide.
