Nokia research center California : Nokia announced the expansion of its global research activities with the opening of a facility located in Silicon Valley, California. Nokia Research Center, which recently celebrated its 20 year anniversary, has a mandate to inspire innovation, drive renewal, and develop next generation mobile phones and mobile technologies. To foster open innovation, Nokia also announced a three-year agreement with Stanford University, to develop joint research projects on collaborative mobile computing and applications. (Panasonic), NEC Corporation, Samsung Electronics, CO., LTD, SiBeam, Inc., Sony Corporation and Toshiba Corporation announced that they are working as a special interest group called WirelessHD to develop a specification for a wireless high-definition digital interface, that is intended to enable high-definition audio video (A/V) streaming and high-speed content transmission for consumer electronics (CE) devices. In addition to actively promoting the new format throughout the industry, WirelessHD will present the format available for adoption as soon as the specifications are completed, in 2007.

Camera phone sales drive image sensor market : In 2005, the image sensor market continued its strong growth, spurred by the booming camera phone market, reports In-Stat. Camera phones comprised over 70% of all digital cameras that shipped in 2005, and the vast majority of these devices used Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) sensors, the high-tech market research firm says. Because of the strength of the camera phone market, overall area CMOS image sensor shipments exceeded area CCD shipments by nearly a factor of three in 2005. This gap will continue to widen through 2010. "CMOS will continue to flourish, due to its popularity in camera phones, web cameras, and toy cameras," says Brian O'Rourke, In-Stat analyst.

Consumer Electronics Gifts : Consumer electronics (CE) gifts will account for a quarter of all holiday gifts with revenues reaching $21 billion this holiday season, compared to $17 billion (21 percent) in 2005. Results from the 13th Annual CE Holiday Purchase Patterns study were presented by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) at CEA's 2006 Industry Forum, a three-day conference designed to inform, connect and educate professionals, industry analysts and media on the latest trends, technologies and legislation affecting the industry. "The holiday outlook for our industry is a merry one," said Director of Industry Analysis Sean Wargo. "Consumers' confidence in the economy is on the rise and the CE industry will benefit.
