Mobile phone image quality : Flextronics Components Group, a division of Flextronics, and HP announced a five-year technology collaboration agreement to help mobile camera phone users capture photos with the same high quality they achieve from their digital still cameras. As part of the agreement, HP will provide an exclusive license of its image processing technology to Flextronics for use in camera modules, in return for a royalty. Originally designed for the award-winning HP Photosmart digital cameras, HP’s image processing technology will correct and enhance digital images in Flextronics- designed and manufactured camera modules. Flextronics’, will embed the technology into mid- and high-range camera-enabled mobile devices.

Konica Minolta Thailand sells assets to Cpac : Cpac, Inc. today reported it has completed the purchase of certain assets from Konica Minolta Photochem Thailand (Pcth) to manufacture photographic chemistry, effective October 17, 2006. Under the terms of the agreement, Cpac will operate Konica Minolta’s photochemical production and distribution facility in Sriracha, Thailand until December 31, 2006. After that date, the operation will be transferred to the Cpac Asia Imaging Products Limited (Cpac Asia) facility near Bangkok, Thailand. To accommodate the new volume, Cpac Asia will add approximately 20,000 square feet of space to its existing facility, more than doubling its warehouse capacity.

Brooks photography exhibition about Iraq war : In 2004, the U.S. Army 425th Civil Affairs Battalion from Santa Barbara was deployed to Iraq. Among those tasked to complete a tour of duty was Jeff DelaCruz, then a student at Brooks Institute of Photography. With active duty status as an Army Civil Affairs sergeant, the new solider had a front-line view of the impact of war and, as photographer, he had the intuition and ability to try and capture it in pictures. DelaCruz, who has returned to Santa Barbara to continue pursuing his Bachelor’s degree in Professional Photography, will introduce a retrospective of his time in Iraq, A Soldier’s View: A Pictorial Reflection of the War in Iraq, at the Brooks Institute.

Epson Scholarship for Minnesota student : Brooks Institute of Photography announced that high school senior Danielle Schalesky, from Lakeville, has been selected to receive the 2006 Warren King Foundation/Epson Scholarship. According to Warren King, chairman of the Foundation board, Schalesky’s application and portfolio, both of which were required for the scholarship review and determination, unquestionably illustrate her commitment to pursuing a future in professional photography. The scholarship was conceived by Warren King and inaugurated with Brooks in 2002 to nurture the study of photographic arts in California high schools. Later, the program was expanded to encompass high schools throughout the United States.

Polaroid Donates to Harvard Business School : The Polaroid Corporation's Archives, a unique collection of materials that document the evolution of one of America's most famous companies, have been donated to the Harvard Business School's Baker Library. Housed in the library's Historical Collections, the Polaroid Corporation Archives includes approximately 1.5 million items dating from the company's founding in 1937 to the present and chronicling the invention of instant photography by Polaroid founder Dr. Edwin H. Land as well as company press clippings, packaging, employee newsletters, and annual reports. Artifacts within the collection include sunglasses, military goggles, 3D glasses, and examples of many of the camera models.

Kodak Prevails in Patent Suit with Ampex : Kodak announced that the Federal Court in the District of Delaware granted summary judgment on Kodak's behalf in a patent infringement lawsuit brought by Ampex Corporation, ruling that Kodak's digital cameras do not infringe a patent owned by Ampex. The decision ends the nearly two-year litigation in the District Court, although Ampex may appeal the ruling to the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. "We believe that the Court reached the correct result," said Laura G. Quatela, Managing Director, Intellectual Property Transactions and Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company. "We have devoted significant resources to the research and development of our digital capture technologies."
