Document scanner sales survey from InfoTrends : According to a new forecast report released by InfoTrends, shipments of document-class scanners have grown at a rate of over 50% for the third straight year. Workgroup scanners represent the largest segment of the market, with shipments rising 75% between 2004 and 2005. Departmental scanners are beginning to see some impressive growth due to lower price points and innovative features. Nevertheless, this segment faces serious potential challenges from increased feature sets in the Workgroup segment as well as improving multifunctional peripheral (MFP) solutions. There is continual interest in MFPs and how they compete against single-function document scanners.

Consumer Electronics growth to continue through 2007 : The Consumer Electronics Association forecasts total CE factory-to-dealer sales to reach $140 billion in 2006, an eight percent growth over 2005, as shown in figures released today by CEA in its semi-annual U.S. Consumer Electronics Sales and Forecasts Report. According to CEA Market Research, final year-end totals reached $128 billion in 2005, making 11 percent growth over 2004. "The mid-year numbers show continued robust growth in the CE industry, category to category," said CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro. "Consumers are embracing new technologies in this digital age, as they make new or upgrade purchases for the home, the car, the office or anywhere."

Seiko Epson agrees inkjet cartridges settlement : In on-going activities to protect its intellectual property rights, Seiko Epson Corporation has agreed to settle with Recharge Inkjet Technologies Limited an internet retailer (trading under the name CartridgeMonkey) based in Bolton, UK. The settlement terms include Recharge undertaking not to infringe Epson’s patents and registered designs, and making substantial settlement payment to Epson. The full terms of the settlement are confidential. Mr Scott, director of Recharge said, “Following discussions with Epson's, we have discontinued our range of ink cartridges compatible with Epson branded printers because of concerns that they may infringe Epson's intellectual property rights.

This capacity is expected to increase to nearly 5 million discs per month by October as additional lines are added to the facility. Harris Poll survey names Sony as number one brand : For the seventh year in a row, and the ninth time in the last 11 years, Sony has been named the number one brand, according to the annual Harris Poll survey of the best brands conducted by Harris Interactive. This year's poll reflects the results of an online survey of 2,351 adults conducted in the United States between June 7 and 13, 2006. Respondents were asked to name three brands that they consider the best, and in the 12 years since this question has been asked on The Harris Poll, Sony has never been ranked lower than third. Sony led this year's list followed by Dell, Coca-Cola and Toyota (Numbers 2, 3 and 4, respectively). The results of the survey were released yesterday.

Online photo print solution survey from InfoTrends : According to a recent InfoTrends survey of 1,743 Internet users in Western Europe, almost 75% of respondents owned a digital camera. Most respondents printed some photos, but only a fraction printed more than 20 per month. More than half of the respondents most often printed at home, while retail was the second most popular printing location. "One of the most surprising findings of this survey was the loyalty levels. Nevertheless, photo print volumes are shifting towards retail locations and online photo services as awareness increases," commented Mette Eriksen, a Consultant for InfoTrends. "We discovered that preferred print location depends on the size of the print job.”
