Hitachi 2.5 Inch CinemaStar hard drive : Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi) today introduced the newest member of its CinemaStar product line. With an upper capacity of 160 gigabytes (GB), the new 2.5-inch hard disk drive is tailor made for the next iteration of slim digital video recorders (DVR) by incorporating features that optimize the storing, retrieving, streaming and editing of digital video. The new product, called CinemaStar C5K160, is based on the Travelstar 5K160 notebook hard drive, Hitachi's reliability-focused, debut perpendicular recording product. Earlier this year, Hitachi introduced the 3.5-inch CinemaStar 7K500 and 7K160 hard drives for standard DVR applications.

Hitachi America appoints Vice President marketing : The Ubiquitous Platform Systems Division of Hitachi America, a subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd, announced the appointment of 15-year consumer electronics veteran Daniel Lee to the position of vice president of marketing. Lee will direct Hitachi's U.S.-based marketing, communications and advertising strategies across the company's complete line of consumer electronics, including high-definition plasma, LCD and projection televisions, and DVD camcorders. Additionally, Lee will be responsible for Hitachi's expanding brand awareness efforts, including its new "Power Unleashed" integrated national advertising campaign. Mr. Lee will be based out of Hitachi's San Diego, California office.

Hitachi’s 42-inch models introduce 1080 vertical lines of resolution to the 42-inch plasma screen size for the first time. This original Hitachi plasma technology creates a line for vertical line match with the dominant 1080i HDTV format. Hitachi Maxell develops optical storage technology : Hitachi Maxell, Ltd. has developed an optical storage technology "stacked volumetric optical discs (SVOD)" that can boost per-volume capacity by using a film-type disc medium with a thickness of 92 μm. The prototyped disc is a recordable disc with a diameter of 12 cm which is equivalent to that of DVDs. It includes two 92 μm thick disc media that are bonded with each other, and the capacity on both sides totals 9.4 GB. Based on the new technology, the company has succeeded in the development of a high-capacity optical storage system having 940 GB by accommodating 100 newly developed discs in a dedicated cartridge (thickness: 6.5 cm; width: 13.3 cm; depth: 16.1 cm).

Hitachi Deskstar used in StoreData Cinema System : Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi) today announced that its award-winning Deskstar hard disk drive will be used in SM Data's StoreData Digital Cinema System, one of the first hard-drive-based digital cinema projection systems in Europe. The StoreData solution uses multiple 500-GB Deskstar 7K500 SATA hard drives for storing digital cinema content, replacing the need for storing and projecting cinema content using 35-mm films. Hitachi Deskstar drives were chosen for their large capacities, high reliability, ultra-fast transfer rates, quiet acoustics and low power requirements.
