Sigma DP1 hands-on

Dennis Hissink : 2006-10-05 03:25:00
Sigma DP1 hands-on : During our meeting with Kazuto Yamaki, Chief Operating Officer, from Sigma Japan, I had the opportunity to touch and try the new Sigma DP digital compact camera. Although the status of the Sigma DP1 is pre-pre-pre-production, in the words of Kazuto Yamaki, we can already share our thoughts with you based on this model. The Sigma DP1 is compact and is basically similar to ordinary compact camera models. However the big difference between an ordinary compact camera and the Sigma DP1 is its image sensor. The Sigma DP1 incorporates the same Foveon X3 image sensor like the Sigma SD14 digital SLR camera. And this is kind of unique cause every other digital compact camera incorporates smaller image sensors, often smaller then before.

And it is impressive to see how one manufacturer like Canon is able to offer so many solutions to photographing, printing, scanning, storing, sharing, etc. Canon's series of digital cameras, especially their Digital IXUS line-up, is very popular. Some weeks ago we were invited to come to London where Canon celebrated ten years of IXUS. Imagine, ten years of IXUS (analogue and digital) resulted into 33 million sold Canon IXUS cameras. Canon's latest IXUS introduction was a series of three Digital IXUS models. Among them the new Canon Digital IXUS 850 IS.

Samsung Pro815 at Photokina : The Samsung booth drew quit a lot of attention and especially the new NV-series were quite appealing to a lot of the visitors. Of course the new 10 Megapixel Samsung GX10 made people curious and a lot of them wanted to find out what the deal is between Samsung and Pentax. Somehow it surprised me to see that Samsung did not introduce a real 100% Samsung-only DSLR. However this new model seems to be the first end-result of the cooperation between Samsung and Pentax and we were promised that we may expect more to come… Among the new stylish Samsung NV-series the Samsung Pro815 was showcased behind the glass. This model was awarded with a DIWA Gold award and is still quit unique in its own way.

Ilse Jurriën : 2006-10-03 03:01:00
Sony Cybershot DSC T50 showcased : Of course Sony was presented at the Photokina show, but actually did not had much news to unveil. The new Sony T50 was introduced in September 2006 and features a 1/2.5-inch 7.2 Megapixel Super HAD CCD image sensor. This little digital compact camera incorporates a bunch of gyro sensors to stabilize any camera shaking caused by photographing in dim lit conditions of with long shutter speeds and telephotographing. It is interesting to see how small the components are integrated in the Sony Cybershot DSC-T50 camera. Two halves of the body, a lens unit, CCD sensor, processor and a large 3-inch format LCD display are the main components of today's modern compact camera.

We believe Pentax has an interesting digital SLR that is able to conquer an impressive market share in the segment of 10 Megapixel digital SLR cameras. Although the Pentax K10 is their latest introduction, other products drew our attention. Pentax showcased some digital camera concepts which were quite interesting. What about the Pentax L-size digital camera concept which is a concept idea to develop a digital camera with an integrated photo album. This concept, created in 2002, was developed to find out how to integrate a large 3-inch LCD display into a compact camera and change the operation by incorporating a touch-screen function.

We think of this as Chapter One in the history of the Olympus E-System, and we hope it has helped more people to enjoy photography and be satisfied with the quality of the images they obtain.
