American Photo Editors Choice Award 2006 : American Photo Magazine have announced their eight annual Editor's Choice awards. Photography has always been an art based on science, as advances hurtle us along with startling speed. To produce this special section we turned to Executive Editor Russell Hart and a team of experts, this year including contributing editors Jonathan Barkey and Steve Pollock, Popular Photography & Imaging editors Dan Richards and Debbie Grossman, and writers Aimee Baldridge and Phil Ryan. In addition, Alexis Gerard, president of Future Image Inc., contributed an essay looking into photography's technological future. If the state of the art is this good now, just imagine what's coming down the road.


Nokia N93 shot wins Film Competition

Nokia N93 shot wins Cannes Lions Film Competition : A team from The Netherlands has won the inaugural Cannes Lions Young Creatives' Film Competition for which entries were filmed on the new Nokia N93 mobile video device. Roos de Kok, an art director from Cygnus X-3 agency and Liat Azulay, an art director at EuroRSCG, created a 30 second commercial that encouraged business travelers to return to Cannes with their partners. They beat nine other teams from around the world to scoop the Gold Medal which was presented by Bernard Brochand, Mayor of Cannes, on Saturday 24 June. The teams were amongst the first users of the Nokia N93, a device that offers uncompromised digital camcorder, telephony and rich communication functionalities.

The Nokia 8800 beat off all competition to become the only mobile phone to receive this renowned design quality award. The Nokia 8800 mobile camera phone was singled out for its innovative, high quality design as well as for its smooth deskstand. It is the first mobile phone to use stainless steel and mineral glass in its sleekly sculpted body. Its features include a screen using more than 260,000 different colors to give striking clarity, and ringtones created by Ryuichi Sakamoto one of the world's leading composers. Award winners will be honored today in Germany.

Carl Zeiss Research Award for perfect lens materials : Today, Martin Wegener and Kurt Busch are being honored with the Carl Zeiss Research Award 2006. With their work, the two scientists from the University of Karlsruhe have added decisive momentum to the fields of three-dimensional photonic crystals and optical metamaterials. The Carl Zeiss Research Award is seen as one of the most renowned prizes in the field of optics and is worth 25,000 euros. It was presented for the ninth time this year. Kurt Busch’s contributions to the theory of light propagation in structured materials and Martin Wegener’s experimental approaches have considerably enhanced the possibilities for the production of the three-dimensional photonic crystals.
